Would You Pay $13 For a Pack of Cigarettes?

I just saw on the news that New York is going to raise the price of their cigarettes to $13 a pack which will be the highest in the nation.
I don't smoke and never did but I'm sure this news is not making many New Yorkers happy. I can't imagine paying that much for one pack of cigarettes but if I was a smoker I don't know where my limit would be.
Do you smoke? How much would you pay for a pack of cigarettes?

My fiance smokes and he pays $15 a pack. Those are the cheapest ones you can get here.

@nanette64 that good. I will tell him, but I know he won't do it. He's stubborn like that when it comes to smoking.

If I still smoked - yes I would pay the money. Or I'd move south where they are 1/3 that cost. New Yorkers will find a way to get them cheaper. when I smoked I got my cigs on base so I paid very little for them. Maybe if I had to pay full price I would have quit sooner...hum, no I would not have! I enjoyed smoking.

I can remember back in the day when a pack was .25 @Marilynda1225 . Oh the good 'ole days. I just paid $13.52 for an entire carton. That's only $1.35 per pack ... buy still.

@sugartoes Of course that was when you could buy 3 loaves of bread for $1.00 and gas was 19 cents a gallon too.

Never a smoker. On one hand, raising the price is a means of encouraging smokers to quit. But on the other hand, it's exploitation of smokers for a government tax money grab. Government would bemoan if everyone stopped smoking because the tax money flow would cease.

Exactly @JohnRoberts . They would shift it over to food sources. After all, everybody has to eat don't they?

I quit years 20+ years ago and thank heavens my husband stopped before we even married. I don't know a soul who smokes these days except for the ignorant. Our stores don't even sell them anymore! I find that these prices and taxes are awfully high, and it is usually the poor and uneducated who smoke and will pay.

With so many non-smoking places in NY it's a wonder people still find places to smoke (other than their homes and cars)

At that price I hope others can see a motive to give up the habit for once and for all.
I do know that it is not easy to kick that habit either.

I've never smoked. That sounds outrageous though. Maybe some will actually quit

No I would not when I quit they were $2.50 a pack.
Tony quit last year and they were $5 a pack, some places $7, usually he got a carton of Winston for $45.
Lung cancer stopped him, not the price.

@Marilynda1225 Oh my gosh, $13? That would be enough to make any smoker quit!
