Evidence of the Battle of Normandy

We are back in Normandy and I was wondering when we’d chance upon something to do with the wars. Sure enough today we turned down ‘Corridor of Death’ and came to a stele and information plaque about a big battle fought here from 19 to 21 August 1944 at the end of World War II. It seems the Allies, in particular the Canadian and Polish armies, closed in on the Germans and over the three days 50,000 Germans escaped, 10,000 were killed and 40,000 were taken prisoner. The area is called ‘Hill 262 North’ referring to the altitude displayed on survey maps of the time. It was one of the last combats of the Battle of Normandy. The plaque informed us that in the field where Panzer tanks had been blown up, it took 40 years before the grass regrew in those areas. We were there a week after the anniversary and there had obviously been a memorial service held there. I wonder if we’ll come across any other unexpected relics of the World War.

My older son toured Normandy. With its history, I'm sure you will come across many more relics.

I bet you will come across more evidence of the War as you explore. It kind of brings the war and the losses to a sharp reality in your mind.

We visited quite a few war sites last visit as Vince had a great uncle killed on the Somme. We visited a museum yesterday which dealt with the effect of the war on civilians. It's incredible how many lives were lost.

@amadeo I think it was more or less the first time the US got involved in actual fighting.

I have relatives were part of the Battle of Normandy. Few talked about it because the memories were to terrible.

I think many soldiers just wanted to forget the whole thing - but that was pretty difficult to do.

Sites like this really interests and amazes me, but there's also a part of me that is horrified by the things that has happened there, still, it would be awesome if I could visit it someday too.

There are mixed feelings aren't there? Some of these places are very, very sad but it is good to pay our respects to those who fought.

@JudyEv Yes I agree, plus being in a place that has a big part in the history can give anyone that sort of eerie feeling.

I think those places of memorial are very special. .. I think there were several other key battles fought in that area...one of which is the DDay landings ...where allied forces landed on the beaches of normandy in an effort to push back the German troops...

The Americans were very involved in the Normandy landings but Australians were fighting elsewhere at the time.

Very interesting. Most likely you will find more relics since Europe was quite destroyed by the time the WWs ended.

We saw a lot of war sites last visit too. The whole of France (and many other places) was affected. It's amazing that some places managed to rebuild really.

Our area is rich with the Civil war memorials, And that has some people mad and tearing down the statues.

The US was very involved in the Normandy landings but no Australians. When we were in Bayeux last visit, the place was buzzing with Americans visiting sites where relatives had fought.

@JudyEv - It's sad that such a beautiful place is only known as probably the most violent day in history.

So the sign said. I can only presume the fires were so hot it sterilised the ground beneath.
