The Horse falls in love while on vacation

I went up to visit a music buddy in Paradise CA over the past couple of days. While I was up there, my friend introduced me to his girlfriend's newish horse in the back yard. She's about 20, and hasn't been ridden in a few years. She was something of a rescue. When I met her, I did my normal horse stuff, sniffing her nostrils, sharing a couple of apples with her, petting her gently, and slapping her on the butt. I could tell that she could tell I was a horse person, so I picked up each of her feet, pretend cleaned them, and took her fly mask off. Her eyes looked happy, so I went to small barn in her pasture, where my friend said the halters were. She followed me into the barn, and I put a halter on her. No problem. I led her around for awhile, and she basically told me that she was ready to be ridden again. But my buddy's girlfriend, who is out of town, wasn't there, so I didn't jump on her. Later, I gathered some more apples went back to visit her (it was 105 degrees F out, so imagine everything happening slowly). She came to the fence nickered, and put her ears up. I knew I had made a new friend. My friend says they don't let her have a cell phone, but I'll figure out a way to be in touch.

@Thehorse It's late and all the way through that first paragraph I thought you were talking about his girlfriend rather than his horse. Sorry.

I've tried rescuing 20-something humans. It never works out.

Is that her in the pic? That is a beautiful horse. I have only ridden a horse a couple times.

@toniganzon My friend has bluegrass jams at his house now and then. There's actually one next weekend, but I can't make it because of a gig here in the Bay Area. I'm guessing...two months.

She is lovely, hide a cellphone where she sleeps, so you can chitchat when your friend his sleeping and nobody will know.

Why didn't I think of that! But typing with hooves is hard enough. I'm not sure if she could dial those tiny numbers.

A beautiful horse indeed! I'm sure if she could read this post and see how nicely you talk about her, she wouldn't have a chance to fall out of love after vacation.

@mildredtabitha I think horses have good memories for "friend" and "foe." What she seemed to enjoy the most was me cleaning her feet, brushing her, putting the halter on, and leading her around--the kinds of things humans do before they ride a horse.

Horses kind of live in the moment, though. But maybe she'll remember me next time I'm there.

She looks pretty good for a horse that's 20 years old. I'm not really very horse savvy but is that old for a horse? I'm sure she appreciated your attention and affection. Too bad you didn't get a chance to ride her

It's more or less "late middle age." A well-cared-for horse can live to be 27 or more.

You sniffed the horse's nostrils? How close did you get to do this?

This is a standard way of getting to know a horse. You stick your nose in their nose and then pull back slowly. It says, "I am equal to you, no better and no worse." It can be a slightly moist experience.

Yep. She's a real sweetie. Her owner wants her back adjusted by a horse chiropractor before she rides her. That made me chuckle, but maybe it helps. Who knows?

"And they called it horsey love...." I enjoy horses, too. The last couple of times I went riding it hurt my back severely, so I just admire them from a distance now.
