Condiments and Hot Dogs- What's Your Pleasure?

Well we in the United States and possibly some other countries just celebrated Labor Day (U.S. spelling) weekend. And my question has to do with what condiment you put on your hot dog? Was it mustard or ketchup? Or perhaps something else entirely? A recent radio program I was listening to was having this debate. Apparently, the host was claiming when we reach adult age, it is no longer appropriate to use ketchup on a hot dog. He claims mustard and hot dogs go together and to use anything else would be wrong. I searched on google and found an article by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, which said it was bad etiquette to use ketchup on a hot dog after the age of 18. What do you think and what condiment do you use? Photo- nj.com

Before I stopped eating hot dogs, I had ketchup and mustard on mine.

Say what? lol. Well, I happen to like ketchup, diced raw onion, relish and sour kraut on my 'dog. That is , if it is an actual hot dog. If it's a brat typically I don't put anything with it.

Lots of votes for onions. I usually have them on burgers but maybe I should try them on hot dogs too!

Well then, oops, bad etiquette it is for me because I eat ketchup on a hot dog, DB, and sometimes since I am such a rebel, it seems, I add mustard to it too!

@dgobucks226 , lol, did I just hear a rebel roar? . Some issues aside, I am okay, thank you, just busy dashing around. Why does time keep getting away? How are you today, DB?

@bluesa Very busy trying to find a reliable handyman to fix some household things which need attending. Also had to call my utility company, pay bills all that necessary stuff, ugh. Rather sit on the beach, but guess what...thunderstorms today! So, good day for chores

I don't know why ketchup on hot dogs is frowned upon in the U.S.? I put relish on mine sometimes. It gives the hot dog a little pizazz.

@dgobucks226 I have a daughter who tried BBQ sauce on everything as a child. I had to eat her leftovers often when she was tiny.

I think it's silly to limit ketchup to an age group! But I don't use it and never have. I eat hotdogs differently than most. First, I don't like hotdog buns because there is too much bread. I use loaf bread, then I put mustard on it, split a hot hotdog and put cheese and horseradish sauce in it.

Wow, that could be a new hot dog fad! I sometimes put mine on a hoagie type roll and slice the hot dog to accommodate. Then, I put baked beans on top with both mustard on the dog and ketchup on the beans. Delicious

@dgobucks226 Growing up my dad put mayo on almost everything, so I guess I picked up the habit from him.

Chili and cheese is a nice combination. Never tried mayo. That's different. I use ketchup and mustard too. I like to balance out the flavor.

I almost never eat hot dogs, but I would never put ketchup on an hot dog. Well I would never put ketchup of any other food either. A hot mustard like in Germany do is pretty good with a hot dog.

@dgobucks226 In German speaking countries frankfurter, wiener and bratwurst are popular, usually served with potatoes at noon, not in a bun. The European countries are not like the USA, each country has very different habits, ketchup is surely not popular in Spain, France and Italy, a bit more popular in Germany, Austria and the northern countries.

I would think some areas of Europe eat something equivalent to hot dogs? Maybe brats? Is ketchup even popular at all in Europe? Just some questions that jumped into my mind from reading your response. Obviously, ketchup is a huge condiment in the United States.

And why is it bad? Is it because of the age? I dont see any difference in putting ketchup in a hotdog after the age of 18 or before. The taste is still the same.
