2 years ago my youngest son enrolled in a 4 year course HRM (Hotel and Restaurant Management). Unfortunately he did not pursue his studies coz he got bored with the minor subjects (whatever his reason is). He wanted an all cooking and baking class (°_°) I knew it was his passion , but , the tuition fee for a Diploma In Culinary Arts is too high here in our country. But what should I do? (--__--) After 4 months of inquiries, assessment, consideration from several Culinary schools finally, I gave in. My son started his first day this morning and all I can say is " It's Worth It". I saw the excitement and glow in his eyes. He prepare his things last night and woke up early this morning ( to make sure he won't be late at school). Hopefully , with God's help , my son's dream may come true Do you support your kids passion dear friends and Mylotters? Or, will you insist your choices? jaiho (^__*) 10:57pm Wednesday Sept. 6, 2017 PT

No kids to support but I do think it is important for parents to do all they can to support their children. So glad your son is learning what he wants. With luck perhaps one day he will be the owner of a restaurant and then you'll sure be a proud mom.

I have no children, but I would have loved if my parents would have supported me and it was not the case. I am glad you did for your son.

Sorry to hear that my dear, and I do understand the feeling, we're on the same boat. My parents did not supported me too , but, I don't have any ill feelings though sometimes I can't avoid thinking the "what if's " if they've ever supported me in my dreams. That is one reason why I always give my support to my kids dreams and passion, coz, I don't want them to feel what I've felt before.

@jaiho2009 In the past it was more or less the same for all kids, they had to obey to their parents. I also never wonder "what if's" it brings nowhere. Better to be happy with what we have.

Hello Sis. It's been a long time since we last mingled here. lol I think it's reslly time for us parents to just support our kids and achieve their dreams rather than insist what our choices for them. But to tell you, I am one stubborn child who didn't followed my father's wish for my future and went on my own chosen field. But nevertheless, I didn't failed him and found good fortune and give my own family better lives.

Is this the son of yours we saw in television once? I still think that he should have pursued a for year course. He could have tried culinary, hotel and restaurant management is not bad.

Hello LK, Yes, he was the one who appeared on TV (that was twice then). I can't forced him to continue the 4 years course coz, he doesn't like the other subjects. All I can do now is to support him for his passion though , it's a bit costly. This is also a Diploma course ,10 months studies and 2 years internship. May sound a short course but twice the costs of a 4 years course

Insisting on your own choices will never work out for the child, so yes, I do support what my children do.

Exactly my friend, it is always best to support our kid's passion and dreams than forcing them to obey our choices.

I learned this lesson the hard way. I had to allow my teenagers to pursue their passions and not mine for them--it hurt a bit, but was worth it in the end

That's great that he's getting to go! My oldest daughter wants to do the same thing and if we can afford it we will send her to a culinary school.

I am always amused watching chefs moves, the way they slice onions, garlic, fruits and veggies. I never thought that my son's passion in cooking will lead us through this journey. I know someday, when your daughter reaches the right age, you will be supporting her too

I have three kids and I supported them all. It just happened that my youngest son's dream costs a lot that, it took us some time to save for it.

I know most parents would agree that when it comes to their children, they want the best for them. Glad that you are supporting him all out. Just trust God. Nothing is impossible with Him. Ask whatever you need through Jesus Christ.

Yes, not every parents supports their kids' dream and wishes - I knew it coz I have been there. That is one reason why I always support my kids, cause I exactly know the feeling of discouragement. I don't have ill-feelings towards my parents though and no regrets too. But, I don't want any of my kids to experience what I've felt before. I always thank the Lord for guiding my kids , with God's grace and mercy my two older kids are already working and pursuing their passion/dreams and enjoying their choice.

@jobelbojel Things happen in our lives beyond control , I have my part and I realize why it has to happen. It happens to me, to make me fully understand that we must support our kids first , and if they failed , that will be the right time to lay our own choice or suggestion.

I'm so glad you have managed to find a way to help your son achieve his dream. I think it's important to help your kids achieve the life they want rather than forcing them down a path of your choosing. In the UK it is possible to start as a trainee or commis chef in many of the hotels. They Will train and pay you while you work bit also pay for you to attend college to get your qualifications. Something like that would have been great for your son! I hope he enjoys his new course and repays you with lots of posh meals when he's a famous chef with his own restaurant!!

How I wish we also have that same option here in our country, but, sad to say we don't have that kind of offer. Actually , part of the study is an On-the Job Training where students will be working in a restaurant (as a trainee) for 2-3 months without pay. There is also an option for "internship" abroad and that is an additional fee (again) depends on your country of choice. That is why Culinary Arts is one of the costliest course here in our country.

@jaiho2009 It really is a shame you don't have that option. For me It was a great way to learn from some of the best chefs in our country and get paid at the same time! I learnt more In the kitchens than I ever learnt on the college days. I hope your son continues to enjoy his course and I wish him every success In future!

@Essjayd Really a shame and very sad too. Imagine those young aspirants , the skilled ones and everyone who has the potential to become great cook/chef but don't have enough resources to sustain for their studies and passion. Thanks for the wishes and I prayed hard for my son's future in his chosen field.
