The "If I Were You" Line

After reading a few discussions this morning I had some of those memories pop up from someone in my past that used to say " if I were you I would " and they would put in their advice and then instantly criticize the way you have been doing things. I listened to every word they had said and not once did I ever take their advice, why? I took a good look at their life and it did not look so good to me. I am not sure why this person wants people to fail in life, maybe because they do not have any real accomplishments in life to show? Failed marriages and giving relationship advice ? No way listen to this person. No home? do not listen to financial advice! So the next time you hear " If I were you" take a good look at that persons life and RUN away from the advice. What I have found to being a successful method to achieve what you want is to look to successful people and follow their lead. This was inspired by a discussion by @Hatley someone told her she ate to much for breakfast. I say if its so wrong why has she lived to be so old? There a little food for thought. How is your day?

I was in a nursing home for a month and I know the portions they give people. I seriously doubt @Hatley had too much to eat. I tend to use that line a lot, but not to give advice so much. When asked my opinion about something is when I use that line. I don't just volunteer unwanted advice. I never take that either.

I always go by live and let live. Why do so many people tell others what to do or worry about what they do? It doesn't affect anyone else but themselves. Gosh, we're all trying to live the best we can while hoping for some happiness along the way. The person said it was too much for her to eat for breakfast, not for Hatley to eat. She said she doesn't eat breakfast so that would be too much food for herself.

Too funny this just happened to me the other day. I just posted a discussion about National Debt Relief and a friend that is $50,000 in credit card debt. He was over at my house the other night and I just bought some new patio furniture for my deck. He said to me If I were you I wouldn't buy stuff you don't need! I stopped and laughed and said I have NO credit card debt, I paid cash for the patio furniture, and I may not NEED it but I WANTED it and I can AFFORD it. He just assumes everyone charges everything. Not this girl- emergencies only

That is so funny and such excellent advice. I do the same. Normally people who try to give advice don't have any idea what they are talking about. Even as a mother, I never tried to give advice to my daughter. When asked a question I answered it with a question and gave some examples. She then had to figure it out and make her decision. She always made the right one. To this day she thanks me for not telling her what to do or criticize her decision. At home I alsways ask my BF why he did it this way and if it might not be better another way. He looks and thinks and sometime he says yes and other times he says no and tell me why. It is easier this way.

@andriaperry You are so right. I try to be like this with all people. I can't stand when a person knows it all and in the end knows nothing.

Some people are real busybodies. They can't seem to help but give advice. You have really spelt out some truths here. How come they are not much more successful if they have done what they propose you should do?

I know of a few like that and thought well the good thing is you aren't me. I hate little jabs being taken at me or my family and for the most part my mouth opens before I can stop it. Maybe that is why I like the internet more, I can read what would have came out of my mouth and think it over first. Although there is still times!

Funny thing is, so many give advice that we don't ask for! Yes, @Hatley seems to be doing okay for someone who likes to enjoy what seems like a large breakfast to some. A friend of ours at the age of 93 eats a large breakfast and likes to skip lunch or dinner. Many criticize her (so-called health care workers and some family members) but she is the one who is 93!

Some people just have to run their mouths and act like know-it-alls about everything. I don't like being given unwanted advice. I always feel like it's their way of just making a jab at how you're doing things. Some people are just busybodies.

@andriaperry Good grief! Well it's a good thing she's not you! Some people just have to criticize every aspect of our lives. I have had women tell me "If I were you, I would give your guy an ultimatum that he can marry you or you are going to leave." Assuming, of course, that marriage is my ultimate goal, and that I want to leave if I don't get it. These women are always divorced or have had multiple failed relationships, and can never stay with one partner for very long. So no thanks, don't think I'll be applying their advice to my 10-year relationship...

Once one told me, if I were you I would take out that wall and make the room bigger. I wondered if she thought I would just start beating out the wall of my house?!?!?!
