What's in My Salad?

I generally eat a fresh, spinach salad with tomatoes and fresh-cut garlic every day. After eating a few bites, imagine my surprise when I spotted something MOVING in the salad. At first I thought it was a spider; which would have been bad enough but NOOOOOO, it was a Green Beetle.
I freaked out. Had I scrunched him with the fork, I would have thought while chewing, that it would have been a piece of the garlic. I removed said critter and took him outside; since he was still alive, and placed him in the grass.
I then came in and checked the rest of my salad. No critters. I then went to the refrigerator to check the remaining contents in the container for any other 'critters'. I then called the grocery store and they said to bring the rest of the contents and they would give me a refund.
I have no idea where that character came from but talk about a close call!!!!! Ewwww!!!!!

Makes me wonder how many critters we've eaten without knowing it. And I wonder how long till I eat another green salad, LOL

The USDA allows a certain amount of bug parts, rat hair, etc., in all food. There's just no way to get away from it, I guess, we all eat things we don't want to no matter how careful we are.

@dragon54u I guess the chemicals and pesticides being used today didn't work on that fellow.

@nanette64 I wear my glass and check the leaves when I wash my spinach and salads. I do not even want to imagine if one of my guests should find a bug in a soup or a sald.

I guess I should have done that (washed) but with my kinda luck, I'd have scooped him back up and put him back in the container @LadyDuck .

Glad you got rid of the beetle and you didn't eat him. Do you buy this salad ready made? How about getting the ingredients and making your own salad.

@nanette64 so that bugger must have come in the spinach. Hope they check their spinach better from now on.

@RasmaSandra I don't understand how it could have survived from the picking process, cleaning process, packaging process, etc.

This wasn't ready made @RasmaSandra . The spinach, toms, garlic were all separate.

I read not long ago about packaged salads and how they had frogs in them. I swore then I would never buy a package of salad ever. They even had photos of the frogs sealed in the bags. Green one too. Yuck. Not sure I would buy any more packaged salad mix again from that store. I would also think about changing my brand.

@nanette64 Yes, no joke. They showed this a while back about bags of packaged salads, having little green frogs in them. Horrible and they sell this to people. They had taken pictures in one market the salad was on the shelf to sell. They sowed these little green frogs popping their heads up through the salad.

And we worry about chemicals and pesticides in our foods. Well, I guess I did find the 'pest' part @Kandae11 .

Oh no. He survived the picking and cleaning of the veggies and the packaging just to come give you a thrill.I am glad you found him and set him free.

That was definitely a close call! One reason why I don't order salads when I'm out. I just don't know how they clean it, if you know what I mean. If I prepare one at home, I wash each leaf to make sure there aren't any creepy crawlies there.

OMG, I would have gotten sick! I'm generally not a squeamish person and not afraid of bugs but finding one in my food would have really, really upset me! You seem to have kept your cool so you're a more composed person than me!

Was that packaged spinach? Do you not rinse them before eating? I don't eat any salad ingredients straight form the pack.

I am assuming you didn't finish the salad after you saw the critter there. It was nice for the store to offer you a refund. Not every store would do that.
My mom was eating a salad once and in the middle of eating it a grasshopper jumped out of it... I'd freak out and run for my life. Not sure what she did though.
Also, I recently saw an article online that said a woman found a frog in her salad. She kept the frog as her pet. LOL.
