My relationship with tomato soup

Do you like tomato soup? I have never been a huge fan of the orange-y red broth known as tomato soup. Sometimes we eat it with hot dogs cut up in it, and sometimes with a grilled cheese sandwich. Other times it gets added to macaroni and hamburger for a hotdish. One restaurant in the area serves a tomato dumpling soup. It sounds so good, doesn't it? But each time my mom and I have tried it we are disappointed by it's garlic Italian flavor. However - this year - while canning my mom found a recipe from an old family friend. This lady took care of my dad when he was little and has a wealth of old/pioneer recipes. It was for home canned tomato soup. So I said why not? Let's try it. Oh my goodness. I love it! There is nothing like real deal home canned tomato soup. We've made 2 batches so far. I think I will plant more tomatoes next year just to have more of it on hand. I'm sure the canned soup you made was much better than what comes out of a can from the store. I'm glad it turned out so well.

I wanted to make this if tomatoes are in season, especially those that have more juices than those that has thick skin

@FayeHazel I don't know what are their names, i know just by looking at it though we have this "native" juicier and best for sauteeing and we have those that are being used for making a paste--bigger but has a thicker meat ;/

@Lucky15 It's interesting how different tomato types give different tomatoes - some better for juice, some better sauce/canning....

I love tomato soup, especially with toast which I dip into the soup. Your homemade soup sounds really good.

I love tomato soup. Its very delicious. I can have more than a bowl along with toasted bread, it's really an awesome combination .Hot tomato soup with toasted bread. Especially during winters they are just awesome . It's the only soup we would like to have more and more without getting bored of having it.

Oh so true, I didn't like that as a kid, but as an adult, there is something to letting the soup soak into a piece of bread

Very true there too. I notice some of the cheap brands have a "burned" flavor. Ha!

I say put the recipe on here so we can all taste it! I'm not a big fan of tomato soup either, unless it's got something else in it, like cheese. I cook with it more often than eat it. If it's cold outside or I'm a little hungry, I may have a bowl, but always with cheese.

I like tomato soup on its own in a cup on those cold days after being outside fishing, or when I am camping by the fire tastes great. Can not stand any other soup from the can or if I want homemade soup in the winter, its my grandmother's recipe is Borscht made with beets, beef broth, onions, parsnips, celery stalks, carrots, salt and pepper

Oh that sounds good, that borscht. I've heard the name, but I thought it was a meat product not a soup, it sounds really good though
