My Daughter-in-law Got Two New Kittens

United States
September 18, 2017 11:46pm CST
I knew she would. She has been missing her cat so much. So they went to the shelter and got two young male kittens. One is orange striped and one is black. They have been hissing at each other so we are wondering if this is going to work out. Hopefully, they will get used to each other and learn to get along. The orange kitten is named Toby and the black kitten is named Charlie. The orange kitten is making himself at home but the black kitten seems to be very timid and hides under the couch and he didn’t eat anything the first day or even take a sip of water, although she showed him where the food was several times. Hopefully, he will calm down and get used to his new surroundings. Tomorrow is DAY 3, so I’m hoping that the kittens are getting along better and getting used to their new home. They are so cute, but not cuddly yet. I hope that changes. I will try to post a photo of them soon.

It must be so traumatic for such young animals. I hope they settle in soon. I'm sure they will. Cats are very resilient.

Toby is very relaxed and making himself at home downstairs, but Charlie is very timid and for the time being, they are keeping them separated when no one is at home, like this morning. I'm going to check on them later. Charlie is upstairs in their bedroom with the door closed. They each have their own littler box and food and water dishes. In the evenings when everyone is at home, they let the kittens interact but they are still not liking each other.

@IreneVincent It's a shame they are not getting on. I hope they become friends soon.

Cats have such strong personalities. It is fun to watch how they interact. Hopefully, though, they will adjust soon and start getting along. If they don't, they will probably learn to just tolerate one another. I have two that are siblings, and they are still very different(looks and personalities).

I think it would have been better if they were siblings and were already used to each other, but they are very different in personalities. Your cats are cute. What are their names? Are they male of female?

Yes, I hope so too. For now they are in separate areas of the house, but they are put together in the evenings when everyone is at home to watch over them. Normally, we daughter in law works from home, but this week she was called to work in the office so she is not at home. After this week, she will be working from home again every day and she will have more time to interact with the kittens.

@IreneVincent Just let me know if they stop hissing at each other. We got a visitor cat like that one day, and gee, it hissed, shrieked, scared the life out of all of us. The owner wanted us to keep the cat for us but in the end, we had to decline.

Do you know Jackson Galaxy? He has a video over youtube on how to make two cats get along especially when they hate each other. I learned a lot from him. Jackson Galaxy is a famous cat whisperer.

I will certainly check Jackson Galaxy out. I will try to find video today and watch it. Right now she has the kittens separated. Charlie is in their bedroom upstairs with the door closed and Toby is downstairs. Two separate litter boxes and two food and water dishes.

@manu1989 I spent some time today with the kittens because no one else was at home. They seem to be a little more calm, so I guess they are getting used to their surroundings.

Since they are keeping Asher up in their bedroom, I don't see him every day, but Toby is downstairs so I go over and pet him every day and he is getting used to me.
