All cons have one thing in common. They prey on emotions be it greed or fear. The recent trick in town is that conmen will call parents and claim your child had an accident at school and that the child has been taken to the hospital. When you insist the child the conmen will claim that he is in pain. Naturally as a parent you will be dead worried.
The intention of the conmen is to get you emotionally worn out. Later they will tell you to send money because he has internal bleeding and needs to be rushed to the operation room. All this while your phone calls to the school won't go through.
Be careful people are getting clever on getting your hard earned money.

Japan has an interesting way of dealing with this kind of phone scam. They announce all over the town, for days on end, on loudspeakers about the kind of scam and what to do about it. This makes it so nobody believes the scammers and they have to give up.

The example you have given is a trick that can work. I never thought someone could scam people using this tactic. I know any parent can fall for this
