How do you feel about deer hunting? Do you like venison?

Right now a lot of people are out stalking deer to shoot them and bring them home and have them butchered for freezer meat. I used to feel badly about this, but since I have lived in this area for more than 20 years now, I have learned there is a reason for this sport. If there is no control over the population of deer, they will over run the area. This puts people and animals in danger because there will be more deer out on the road and in populated areas where they may get hurt. This being the case, the hunting season is a way of controling the population. In fact the number of licenses and number of deer that can be shot are carefully regulated. I have to admit I really like venison. It has a rich taste, maybe a little gamey, but it is a flavor I like and I have learned to cook it well. I look forward to a good friend giving me a bit of venison to enjoy.

Deer - A deer in the open.
Hunting is done even during the olden times. Esau was a hunter and Isaac asked him to hunt for him before he gives his blessing. There's nothing wrong with hunting. My father was relating stories of hunting deer in the mountains when they went to their relatives. We do not have deers roaming around populated places and deer are already few because of hunting. It's now prohibited to hunt deers.

Where I live, the government keeps track of the deer population and how many does and bucks there are. The government uses deer hunting season as a way to keep control of the population. If there are too many, there are too many car accidents. If there are not enough, they limit the amount of licenses they sell in the season. If there are too many, they sell a certain number of licenses that allow a hunter to shoot one doe instead of one buck. Otherwise it is illegal to shoot a doe or a buck that is too young. Every hunter is allowed only one animal per license.

I don't hunt myself, but my husband is an avid hunter. He uses the bow for deer. It makes the playing field a little more equal. I don't agree with the hunters that use feeders or bait, though. If you can't get them out in the woods, go buy a porkchop! I've noticed that the deer population seems to need more control in the warmer states. I guess that's because the predators and weather don't kill as many.

Yeah, I couldn't kill a deer myself and hate the though of what I am eating but I do love the taste of venison. I just try to put it out of my mind what I am eating. I do understand the need to hunt deer though. A lot of deer are hit by cars in my area.

Stick with the Cows! - Stick with the Cows!
I am not a fan of der hunting. I don't like the idea of people going out into the woods (the deer's home), chasing them around and killing them. I always ask: What did they ever do to you? Did they come after you (in your home) with a weapon of choice to chase you around? No I don't think so. So why do people do it to them? I am not a fan of venison either. My husband will bring it home from his boss (who is a big hunter - deer, elk, bear, turkey, etc...). I will not even prepare it for him much less eat it.

Venison Cooking - venison
I was raised in a family with avid hunters and taught that when hunting is done properly it is very humane. Killing the deer helps make the population smaller, saving many from certain painful starvation. It also is perfectly fine if you're going to eat the meat; however, I would never agree with anyone killing for the sport of killing and nothing more. Do I personally like venison? No. The only way I've eaten it and liked it is in jerky or sausage, and even the sausage is iffy. I personally have no issues with it.

It depends of the deer whether or not I like it. A doe is the best and tastes less gamey. My husband only kills one for food. We do not believe in hunting just for sport. I'm always interested in hearing about how other people cook it. I'm still learning so send me a message with some ideas. Also, I'm trying to eat healthier this year and venison is much healthier than beef. Thanks for the post.

I've been married to a deer hunter for 23 years now, so I've learned how to prepare it so that even I enjoy it. For me, vinegar seems to work best for removing the gamey taste. For roasts, cutlets, etc. I will soak the meat in vinegar and water for about 1 hour before cooking. You can leave it a little longer than that, but DON'T let it soak overnight unless you like your venison pickled. Italian dressing as a marinade also works well on smaller cuts. ~:o Hunters serve a purpose in controlling the deer population and for that, I'm thankful. For several years we lived in a neighborhood that was overrun with deer but as it was in a subdivision, they could not be hunted. This was torture for hubby as he would go to work in the morning and find dozens of them laying in our front yard. With no population control and many multiple births, the city had to take some pretty drastic alternate measures. It was decided that they should be trapped and transported to an area that would support them better. One can only hope they researched the area to confirm the deer could actually survive whereever THERE was.

Deer not only cause car accidents but are really damaging to household vegetable and flower gardens. I used apple juice or Italian salad dressing to marinate my deer meat. I think it's the acid and of course garlic that does the trick.

LOL, they can jump tall fences too. Even my back yard plants weren't safe. You would not believe some of the photos I took when I was there. Dozens of deer just walking down the streets and grazing in the yards. They were used to being fed deer corn by the residents too. :)
