Feeling exhausted

Work is crazy busy and the boss just keeps piling work on since he figures that I do nothing anyway. He even has me doing work that was part of a coworkers job. This is my first break since I got here at 8 am and it is now 2:30. He wouldn't be happy if he knew I was taking a break but I just can't do anymore. My back is killing me and my chest is so sore. I know am overdoing it I can feel it. My blood pressure has been quite high for the past few weeks.
He asked me the other day how I was feeling. That was on Friday and I told him I didn't feel so good. That I was exhausted and having discomfort in my chest and his reply was "we all feel that way. It's all a part of getting old." I feel I am ready for a major breakdown.
Since I got back he has been really pushing me. The doctor told me to ease back into the job but he doesn't care. Sure he offered to buy my dress for my daughter's wedding but he is going to make sure he gets the extra work out of me. It comes at a cost. At this rate I am scared I won't even be around to see my daughter get married.
Sad when I put 30 years into a company that doesn't appreciate all that I do or even care. I feel like I wasted so many years here.
Anyway just needed to vent..back to work I go!

It isn't either a part of getting old. Discomfort in the chest he thought was part of getting old? When you just got back from heart surgery? That's crazy. I don't know your exact situation, but it sounds like you really have to find a way to decrease your stress. I know, easy to say. Someone else here mentioned early retirement. I wonder if you could check into that and perhaps find a way to swing it. Wishing you some relief from all this stress. Your boss does not sound compassionate at all, too many people running around with zero empathy.

Early retirement is not an option because I don't have any type of pension. I need to work to survive. I am hoping things will clam down soon or I will have to talk to him.

Hope you can get it all straightened out. Perhaps it's time to face up to the boss and tell him to start treating you like a human not a robot. What kind of job are you doing? I wish the best for you.

I may have to talk to him. I work in the shop of a printing and sign company.

Well, he does not sound like such a good guy after all. Any chance for early retirement? You could get something from your doc maybe that limits you to 4 to 6 hours. Working that long with no break is probably against employment laws too.

@Happy2BeMe That is a shame. It is too bad that some did not see a lawyer.

No i can't retire because I do think have a pension, I need to work to survive. Oh he breaks all kinds of employment laws and gets away with it. He has been reported by a few former employees but nothing ever gets done.

Is it possible he is pushing you to quit ? Rather than have a sick employee who has thirty years tenure he would like to find some young thing that he can get at a cheaper rate who will not be ill? Or was he always this way, before your heart problems? Or did he help CAUSE the heart problems?

Oh gosh, I was surprised to hear this - I thought he had been cool about things. Yah, it does sound you are definitely overworked right now. You had some major surgery - and really that is still fairly recent . . . he needs to be more understanding and reasonable than this. Please listen to your body - YOU are more important. Do you have HR at your company?

@Happy2BeMe Ah, that's how it was for me at the last place where I worked - the owner and his wife were the only ones "upstairs". Sadly, the Mr. was so controlling that even his wife couldn't really complain to him. I wonder if you could get a doctor's note telling your boss that you need to ease up the job load, or only work a certain number of hours?

@much2say I gave him a note when I came back that said I was on light duty but it made no difference. The wife here is even worse then the boss.

He is all about how much money he can make to maintain his lifestyle and he cares little about his employees.

I was hoping there wasn't a catch to him getting the dress.. but seems like there was. HOW RUDE.
I would take a sick day and rest. Or is there someone above him

Yikes that doesn't sound good. Seems he offered you the dress and now feels like he can push extra hard. Doesn't sound good for your health.

That is so so sad. I am so so sorry. I sell at a place and I have two injured shoulders and before I found a solution for my suitcases I had to lug them back and forth and so I was trying to find a place so did not have to bring my suitcase or suitcases back and forth. So, I found a place and this guy had to try and stop me from leaving my suitcase. He had never to say that everyone has problems. I am not suppose to lug heavy things around and yet he did not care. The guy is a jerk.

He still is a jerk when I see him. When I am not selling at the place I am happy if I do not see him on the street. I have given his children free things and he never really thanked or appreciated it knowing I have to make a living.

I am so sorry to hear that. Actually I think most bosses are the same. They may even think we are idle most of the time and they can't see when we are busy and hardly have a break at work. Furthermore, we also have to suffer the work pressure after work. Such as when I am at home, sometimes I also need to take care of my work and solve issues. I just will not let my boss know. If nothing urgent, I even don't want to bother my boss. I want to just finish the work well quietly.

Maybe you could bring in a doctor's note. Stress and overwork on the job probably contributed to your problem. Your boss sounds like a jerk..I know he is nice to you guys sometimes..but he should show more concern for your well being.

You need to remind your boss all that you went through with your surgery and tell him what your doctor advises about easing back into the job. Also, this something I just thought, "is there a way you can quit your job and go on some kind of disability"?

Can you possibly get a doctor's note to put you on "light duty"? You can't keep going like this. You need to take care of your health and all this stress is not good for you.

@Happy2BeMe Maybe he needs reminding that you are under doctor's orders not to overdo it. If he causes you to have more health problems from disregarding your doctor's note, he could have a lawsuit on his hands.
