did you ever boil water in a kettle and ...

did you ever boil water in a kettle and totally forgot all about it? i never thought it would happen to me. i may not like the kitchen, but i'm always alert when it comes to the stove and the faucet. it's not a whistling kettle, and i forgot to set a timer. usually the boiling water would spill over and kill the flame, so you'll notice a slight smell of gas when you step into the kitchen. but this time it just kept boiling until i noticed a burning smell. i rushed to the kitchen and the kettle was empty - all the water evaporated! would the flame have burned a hole in the pot if it wasn't shut off?

It happened that I forgot a pot with boiling potatoes in it. All the water evaporated and the pot became black, the potatoes had a smoky taste, not bad.

@hereandthere I put coarse salt on the bottom and bicarbonate and let sit the whole night, the day after it was not too hard to clean.

You've wasted gas. You've leave it for so long since the kettle turn empty. It happens to me when I'm cooking rice

@hereandthere Yeah almost half of the rice is browned. It's hard to scrub it afterwards

we always use a rice cooker for the rice. where you able to still eat the rice? it must have been hard to scrub the pot afterwards.

That hasn't happened to me at all and we use an electric kettle for boiling water. Be careful.

That's quite a bit dangerous. I had tried this before but it wasn't that serious.

I'm not sure if it would burn a hole or not but I think it probably would. It might make the kettle unusable.

Yes i have experienced the same. Good thing we had a kettle that whistles! And I supposed if you haven't shut if off it would really create a hole in the pot

i was worried that it would probably burn a hole or explode, both of which would be scary in case they caused a fire.

It very much depends on what metal your pot is made of. If it were aluminium, the bottom would have probably melted, if it were copper, iron or steel, it might have got red hot but it wouldn't have made a hole. My mother once had a cast aluminium saucepan (much heavier and thicker than the ones which are pressed or spun). Our stove was electric and the hotplates were of the solid kind heated by an element underneath them. One day she put some tomatoes in the pot to cook for a little and forgot that she had left the heat on when she went into town. When she returned several hours later, there was a burning smell and she lifted the pot off the ring to find that there was a pool of bright molten aluminium with the blackened image of the tomatoes in it! We switched off the hotplate and let the metal cool, of course! Allowing molten metal to pour into the innards of an electric cooker might have been disastrous!

Oh, my! You literally burn the water. We use a whistling kettle so the moment it starts whistling, I would go out of the kitchen to switch off the gas range. You should now buy a new one - a whistlng one. Mine is a prize from the 2015 Christmas party raffle. I always win a prize from the raffle yearly. Maybe because my birthday is December and I consider it a gift for me.

we like this kettle because it's big. it fills up 2 thermoses. but, yeah, i thought about all the lpg gas i wasted because i'm the one who orders it. more importantly, i'm just glad it didn't explode or anything.

Don't let it happen anymore, because you'd end up the house burning. I remember leaving behind rotten burned eggs.

what happened to the eggs? can you still eat it? was it hard to clean the pot or pan it was cooked in?

It happened once and the pot turned brown. When I warm milk I do it on low heat just in case I forget.

usually, i'm the one who notices when someone forgot about whatever is on the stove. low heat is a good idea. so how did you clean the pot?

I have an electric kettle that automatically switches off once it has boiled the water, but I once forgot a pot filled with water I was boiling to make noodles, when I got back to it the water had almost all evaporated too, and there was a terrible smell in the air. I am happy you switched it off before any damage was done.

This story reminds me of my neighbor who always asks us hot water for his coffee in the morning.

when i boil water in the kettle, i keep the fire at the minimum, so it takes long when it boils. good thing the kettle did not burst due to the hotness since it was empty

When boiling water or milk, I set an alarm in my mobile, so as not to forget about boiling.

yes, we have an electric kettle, but it's small. the water we heat in the kettle is enough to fill two thermoses.

I have done that a few times with my tea pot. Usually when I am trying to do to many things at once. I don't know if it would burn a hole in mine, I don't think so, but it sure leaves a burnt color on the bottom!
