With Christmas fast approaching people are preparing all their Christmas goodies to be enjoyed over the holidays. One of my favorite treats at Christmas time is fruit cake. My mom and my sister use to make the best fruitcakes but mom is no longer with us and my sister doesn't make it anymore either. It is something that I never learned how to make and nobody in my family would eat it anyway.
It is hard to find a good fruitcake. The ones they sell at the stores just aren't the same. I prefer the dark one over the light one. We do have a small local bakery that makes it but it is hard to get because they sell out as quickly as they make it.
I am craving a piece of fruitcake right now. Do you like fruutcake?

I just mailed off three fruitcakes today. I wish you were near me. Mine has real dried fruit in it and butter and eggs from our hens. Its the dark fruitcake. Molasses and honey not refined sugar. Wheat flour. Pecans. Dense and oh so savory.

@Happy2BeMe Once a year sounds fine to me. A girl has to watch her figure or no one else will.

When I was a kid I heard a lot about fruitcake and how delicious they were. But when I tried it, it's something that I didn't want to try again. just not my taste.

I can tolerate it, but my husband won't eat fruit cake. He says there's only ever been one fruit cake and it just keeps getting regifted around the world.

When dad was stationed in Germany mom learned how to make a German Christmas stollen and when dad was stationed back to the US she'd make it a point to make one every Christmas, I'd had the store bought kind but those never could hold a candle to hers @sallypup There's something about homemade that just can't be beat, probably the love that goes into them.

@rebelann One of the horrors of my Mom's dementia: she insisted on having a fruitcake sent from some monks to us. We had homemade fruitcake right at hand but she could not get that in her head. That sent fruitcake?? I am sorry. I finally tossed it out. Even the chickens did not need it. It had a super heavy after taste. The shortening in it must have been rancid. Just nasty. Not like my home done fruitcake. Worst ever.

My husband and I love fruitcake but have never made it. My Mom sends us the best fruitcake each year for Christmas. It is called "Grandma's Fruitcake". It comes from a company that makes it that is located in Dublin Ohio.

@Happy2BeMe I usually make it soon after Christmas, we buy dried fruits for Christmas (dates, figs, raisins) and I use the leftovers to make the fruitcake.

I love fruitcake, but like you I preferred my mama's. She can't cook anymore. I need to see if she wrote the recipe down.
