Everyone gets depression and/or anxiety form time to time but there are many who deal with it on a prolonged basis. Mine was never bad enough to take more than 6 months of medication and therapy though. I now eat healthier, sleep better, take herbal/flower remedies, supplements, and do meditation with the odd tai chi. This keeps things neutral. Happiness comes with engaging in my hobbies of which I'm only just starting to feel good doing again after years of numbness. Anyone got any advice on dealing with the dark abyss of depression and/or the pending doom of anxiety? More importantly, how do we motivate ourselves to look after ourselves?

Meditation is the best thing to get out of depression. Indulge yourself in the things which you like. Don't sit idle and alone, don't let yourself think much.

Very true, I used to stay indoors all day with my dark thoughts now I'm glad things have changed. Thanks, I'll continue doing just that!

"Everyone gets depression and/or anxiety form time to time" i do agree with because to think otherwise would be alienating anyone that admits to it. There are various levels of course anything from a seasonal sigh to a medical condition.

Yes, good point about the levels. I thought I was just going through teenage angst and the winter blues at first but had to finally admit it was more than that.

@amastem the difference between a depressed mind and a balanced mind is the high functioning anxiety mind finds time to relax thus bringing the levels down. When that doesn't happen, the constant cycle of anxiety never stops thus the brain eventually looses its balance and slips into depression.

@Bluedoll Ah I never thought of this perspective before. For a while I thought everyone around me were (was going to say 'normal' but will go with -) in tune with themselves, when in fact they could have been high functioning maybe

I try listening to music. I love music. What herbal remedies do you take? I have tried herbal/flower remedies.

Yes music is a nice healer, I usually go for chillhop as I like to think I'm cool haha I've tried the ashwagandha herb and valerian root, as well as Bach rescue remedy which contains essences like star of bethlehem :) Yourself?

I believe most humans have experienced anxiousness and/or a deep sadness that can become depression due to events in their life, even if it doesn't last long. For others however it can just be the default setting of their biology.

I like how your sister thinks :) took me a long time to stop dwelling on the past but I realised it only kept me stuck in the same place!

You are doing all the right things. I do things like yoga and long distance walking to help tire me out and get rid of negative energy. I also avoid anything that might 'trigger' a bad mood such as bad news in newspapers and on TV. It can be hard to get motivated. Having goals or deadlines for completing things may help.

Thanks as are you! Yes it's all about shaking off those weird feelings which was so hard to do at the beginning. Have you looked up positive news? It encourages a positive outlook on the world which in turn makes things feel less pointless.
