Clay has been told they can not see the baby his sister in law just had until they get a whooping cough vaccine. It seems it is a very dangerous thing going around right now.
For some reason I had thought this no longer was around. Is a lot of the older diseases back these days? Anyone gotten this vaccination? Know anything about this development ?
Just wondering how scary it is. I did a search but like hundreds of other things, I need more info.

Whooping Cough is a very dangerous disease for babies and small children. With the immigration of so many different nationalities it is easy for a disease that had been virtually eradicated to become a problem again. I remember getting the vaccination when I was a kid. I didn't have any side effects and didn't get the disease either. Hope I've helped a little.

@bunnybon7 If you haven't been vaccinated for pneumonia check with your doctor about it! We're having an epidemic of people with what is close or is pneumonia. I had it last week and was sicker than a dog! Saw my doctor today and she commented on how awful I still looked after I told her I had walking pneumonia. California is really swamped with people who are sick with this virus! Be careful!!!

Have not had it unless I got it as a kid. Though i do know some recent first time parents who definitely made sure everyone got that vaccine before going near their kid

I did not have the vaccine as I had Whooping Cough and the whole other load of illness that you usually get.
I would not have the Vaccine myself but whooping cough from one who knows what its like is awful you don´t stop coughing it can be pretty bad.
Having said that the only thing they ever gave me was something that you had to drink hot and tasted like aniseed and so no idea what it was.

Immigration does have a lot to do with a recurrence of some diseases @bunnybon7 . Whooping cough can be deadly particularly to newborns.

My kids had it four years ago when my youngest (at that time) was 5 months old. It was rough, let me tell you! Another family in our church group also had it.
That said, after going through it I did a LOT of research about Whooping Cough. Apparently it comes in cycles, every 3-5 years and there are different strains, so (like a flu) it can be hard to 100% vaccinate against.
The CDC has even admitted that a "pertactin-deficient strain is more likely to cause the illness"(1). Since pertactin is one of the components in the Whooping Cough vaccine, it makes sense that the vaccine wouldn't be completely effective.

Strangely enough, after the kids all caught it, my son's asthma greatly improved! I'd been worried about him, most of all, since every time he gets sick the asthma flares up. But after the bout with Whooping Cough, his asthma wasn't as severe.

If that was me I would never be able to see the child. I had a bad allergic relation to that vaccine as a kid and couldn't have the rest of the doses past the first one. My kids have had the vaccine but I am unprotected from it. It is a bad disease but worse for children to get.

Once in a while, a viral infection that seems to be non-existent at this time, pops up its ugly head! Some can be critical or even fatal, to a newborn baby:(

@bunnybon7 But the shot is so much better, than exposing that baby to an illness.
