-2 no heat again and possible e-coli

School was cancelled yesterday because the windchill was -35. The temperature was 4 degrees F. Today the wind is blowing even worse. Not sure what the wind chill is but its -2.
My boyfriend woke me up at 5 am asking where the hair dryer was. I knew what that meant no heat for the day again .
He plugged in the heat tape and put the hairdryer on the lines under the furnace. Nothing else to do but wait it out and kept resetting the furnace every few hours to see if it's running. It's 48 degrees in here. I have two electric heaters plugged in but it's not going to do much good so we are wearing layers.
Poor guy woke up real early in the morning sick both ways. He had romane lettuce on his chicken sandwich at a resturant last night.
There was a warning by the CDC I showed him before bed not to eat romane lettuce as there have been so many cases of e-coli from it and people dying from it around the U.S. and Canada.
The last thing the poor guy needed while being so sick was to have to go out in the freezing cold to mess with the oil tank for me.
This is going to be a long cold winter! I might need to get an extra heater and half the tank filled with kerosene.

I'm so sorry for both of you! I hope you get heat again soon. It's too cold to be without it. =( I hope he feels better soon too.

He is much better today. He got it running yesterday so we were only cold for a few hours. Him feeling so sick I felt terrible for him in my cold house. I woke up today and the house was below 40 degrees. I got it unthawed and so we were only cold an hour or so before the furnace started running and heating the house but. I’m guessing we will have the same problem tomorrow as well until my dad comes with a fuel additive and heat tape and I get the rest of the tank filled with kerosene.

We have some of our furnaces not working. The way the house is built there are four of them. We have electric wall heaters in the bathrooms and other space heaters available. This is an awful winter. I could have sworn they were predicting mild temperatures again for the third year in a row, if they did, they were wrong. If it is e coli or a bug of some kind he needs to stay hydrated, and let it pass on through. Ginger tea or ginger ale helps.

When a friend and I were hiking a few months back she looked at the trees full of pine cones and said according to the farmers almanac her parents (who were farmers) followed that was a sign of a harsh winter. I’ve never heard of anyone have more then one furnace. Is each one very tiny?

Oh my that is so sick. I hadn’t even though of how it could have gotten on the lettuce. I saw the warning to not eat it on Facebook. Someone posted a news article about it but he had already eaten it and the restaurant must not have known about the warning either.

@shaggin The practice of using human waste (often just the urine) was used in the old old time. Some migrants still did it three four decades ago and got a warning (or even fine) when they sold their beautiful looking their veggies to the public at a very good price and those consumers got bad tummy aches.
Newly arrival migrants? I don't know... (if no one tell them of the rule, then how could they know? They expect everyone to wash the veggies carefully as the normal habit back in their ould countries .)

What is wrong with the furnace? Is it just empty. I read about the lettuce and i stopped buying all of it.

The oil line keeps freezing up. It's just been so cold. First year we have ever had this problem though. I will have to have it half filled with kerosene from now on to help keep it from freezing. Also my boyfriend said there is a section where the pipe isn't wrapped with heat tape so that should be wrapped as well once he gets some for me.

@ricki_911 he told me that it actually is wrapped so it really isn't going to help keep it from unfreezing but it will help them thaw faster when they do freeze by plugging it in to heat up. I went shopping yesterday but Walmart was out of it and I forgot to go to Home Depot. Today we woke up to an even colder house it was below 40 degrees but the thermostat starts at 40 so I don't know how far below 40 it actually was.

@shaggin that would probably cause it if its not wrapped properly especially if the weather cooler.

@LeaPea2417 thank you! The temperatures outside were warmer today (16 F) so it didn’t freeze up this morning thankfully. Feels so good to warm up to warm house instead of below 40 F like yesterday.

He is doing good today. I texted him and he said after he left around noon yesterday he finally ate around 6:30. Today he is feeling fine. We were able to get the furnace running after a few hours yesterday and the kids and I went shopping after to stock up on groceries. Woke up this morning and the house was below 40 degrees brrr.

He is doing good. He felt better by the time he left around noon. He was going to come over this morning to help since my house was below 40 degrees but there was no point in him coming and freezing with us when I knew what to do. Turned the hair dryer on the bottom of the tank where the line is not wrapped then plugged in the heat tape. After an hour I pushed the reset button and the furnace started up. It was so cold that it took 45 minutes for the furnace to warm the house back up to the usual temperature of 64.
