"Is HOMEWORK necessary for KIDS?"

I was reading an article this morning. The Department of Education (DepEd) is planning to implement the “NO HOMEWORK” for the primary to secondary level in the Philippines. The main reason is to let the pupils or students have time with their family on weekends. As they claimed, “It is a family day.” Personally speaking, I disagree with such changes if it is formally implemented. I think the educational system seems like depriving the learners to learn more and be responsible for doing homework.

If teachers need kids to do homework after teaching them for 6-7 hours per day then they are not doing their jobs. They should be teaching plenty in that amount of time so there shouldn't be homework.

@LovingMyBabies In my country, the teachers usually give homework every Fridays. The homework serves as tasks for the whole weekend. I do agree with you that it is overrated if the teachers give homework every day.

@LadyDuck I didn't say it wasn't what was always done, I just dont agree with it. I had homework every single day in school growing up and I had no time to play because of it, teachers can ask questions in class to see if you learned and that's what tests and quizzes are for in class. I think kids need to be kids and they need play time after school-not a ton of homework.

I have the same sentiments for my little niece. There are times that some teachers are unreasonable in giving numerous homework to the students. For instance, my little niece is having a low grade in English subject. The mere fact, she is fluent in speaking the language.

Homework can make the students master the knowledge they learned well. But it shouldn't be too much.

@caopaopao I think it is not worth to overload the students with so many homework. I had noticed that most of my online students in kid level are always complaining.

As a teacher, I don't usually give homeworks to my students. but some parents "demand" for it. I was surprised to hear them saying I don't always give students' homework. I told them I allow the students to work on the "homework" in school while waiting for their next teacher. so they can "rest" at home.
Some parents take this as being lazy on part of the teacher.

@Shavkat well some people/schools/ directors/principals/head of academics (like mine) believe that giving assignments to students is helpful for students' learning. so as subordinates/teachers we are forced to give as well. What I usually do is give them simple and easy homework and most of the time I don't give homework on Fridays or last day;s classes.

I think kids have too much homework and they don't have enough time after school to wind down before bed. A couple times a week is ok but not every day

Have to say in this case that far too many young children are overloaded with homework and not enough time for play.
They are quite pasty looking some of them and need to be out in the Sun and not being overloaded with books of which there is plenty of time for later on in life.
Before there was not enough homework and so now they are doing the opposite too much way too much.

I do think that teachers need to balance things up in giving homework. A perfect example of students having a lot of homework is in China. Most of my online students are complaining about this concern. They are overloaded with homework the whole week and even during the holidays or school vacation.

I think its good not to give homework for weekends. when i was kid teachers used to give us so much of work so that we will be busy. I never liked it. If we complete everything at home what will they teach us at school. weekends are meant to spend with family and outing ,thats also a learning .This teaches are so many things in life. Family bonding, travelling, caring and many other things.

i think a homework is needed for the weekend, if we want to have our kids gain more brains and intelligence. but i would suggest that the homework should be done on Sunday evening, because they have to enjoy the weekend, free from books.

During the old days, I do like having homework. It is the best way to make a student explores his ability in solving things up. If the DepEd will stop this totally, then it encourages the students to be lazy and rely more on playing modern gadgets.

@ridingbet You said it right. That's the reason why some students are weaklings. I am sure you had noticed this concern to some of your interns.

@Shavkat right. even the E-book is in gadget so the books in the libraries are so seldom read and borrowed for overnight by the students of today

I don't always do my homework before because I don't have time.
After school, Mother always wants me to the chores sometimes I cooked our rice.
At an early age, I know how to clean the house.
And when the time I want to work on my homework, I fell asleep right away cause of the tiredness.
Well, I think it is okay to not have a homework.

I think some homework is good, but I also think that kids should be free of it over the weekend.

Here the study pressure is high. I like that idea that children will not have homework. Hopefully they will have enough time to have a rest and more outdoor activities due to it. I think it will be good enough for them to have the homework or exercises in school. They already study hard in school and it is fine for them to have their own time after that.

I think it is okay to give homework as long as the homework is within the students knowledge capacity and not the parents who are doing it for them. My son had a homework for grade one last year in computer. The teacher was asking to write down in their notebook the different types of website and its description. At grade one?!?!

As the poetry begins 'Work while you work, play while you play..' the children must be taught to balance their leisure hours between work and play. Actually, the elders in the house must have a check on children's activity and guide them from time to time.

I also dont agree with that. I think homework is a form of bonding between the parents and their children. Homeworks also lets the children explore his or her abilities.
