Restaurants Are Not Clean

I just read a discussion @cintol about a bad experience she had at a restaurant and this is not uncommon. Many think that seeing bugs and rodents would make the staff/owners close down and get rid of the infestation but that is far from the truth.
I learned at a very early age that what you dont see can and will make you sick.
My first job (at legal age) I was a cashier at a popular fast food restaurant, one that my dad knew the manager and he gave me a job as soon as I was 16 years old, plus we ate there all the time.
At that time this one offered a salad bar and we always got the salad bar! Crouton and bacon bits on top.
After about a week of work I could barely wait to get home to tell my dad not to eat there anymore.
I was sent to the stock room to get something and I seen these huge boxes of ....would you guess? Croutons and bacon bits sitting on the bottom shelf open and the plastic bag they were in opened and pulled around the boxes and tied into a knot. Well that was pretty bad but then I seen something, the bacon bits were moving!
I walked over because that was just weird and I bent down and shook that box, roughly. Oh my God! when I did these huge roaches jumped and ran everywhere. I was so freaked out and I wanted to throw up.
I went to the assistant manager on duty and told her, her reply was "Get back on your register." I did not work there long I will tell you that.
When I told my dad he never ate there again and actually puked when I told him. RIP, my poor dad had a weak stomach.
Another fast food restaurant my sister managed for a long time got rats and when the higher ups did nothing she quit. Why? rats are nasty and she is terrified of them.
Another thing, those self serve coke machines? Breeding ground for bacteria.
You got any restaurant horror stories?

Cashiers don't usually have time to wash every table between customers at fast food resturants. Watching a boy vomit on a table at McDonalds and the parents wiped it up with a napkin and left. A new customer came and didn't know about the boy and the table wasn't sanitized before the new customer sat and ate there.
Your stories are terrible that the owners didn't care! Now people have cell phones to record things and turn them in.

I wish we could call the police for this reason but they will just tell us to call the health department.

It is their business at stake - so they would never throw away food touched by roaches or rodents. Once last year about 20 people got ill after eating at a restaurant - and would you believe the authorities hesitated to name the restaurant? They eventually had to.

We recently went to a burger restaurant. The plates we were served food on looked greasy and had fingerprints on them. My drinking glass didn't seem clean either. Good thing there was a straw to drink from. Not going back to that place again.

Another buffet in town had greasy plates, I reported them after I seen the manager replace plates I touched because I showed him the grease on them.

My son worked at a restaurant, before he was sixteen years old(paid in cash). They scraped vegetables off the dirty plates of customers, saved them in a bowl. The next day, that owner would add those vegetables into the vegetable soup! Gross

@andriaperry I love dogs, very much. But, this man had an old raggedy looking dog, that walked around in the restaurant, even in the kitchen! It looked like he hadn't had a bath, in years

That is still so disgusting!
My husband and I love bar rescue. Some of the places "before" are just disgusting!!!
I still can't believe mc Donalds never seemed to care when an employee took pics transporting food from one store to another in his personal vehicle. Not clean, not refrigerated, etc.
It was all over Twitter

I worked at a Taco Bell here for a few years in my early 20s. We were not allowed to have scrub brushes for doing dishes, or toilet brushes to clean the toilets, because some idiots were getting them mixed up and scrubbing the dishes with the toilet brushes. We also had cockroaches and I was told by the manager that it was "normal," that you can't keep them out of places that sell food.
One time a coworker got mad at a lady who was being very rude to her in the drive-thru. When she filled her soda, there was a bug in the cup. Instead of throwing out the cup and getting a new one, she just filled it up anyway and gave it to the lady. (The lady WAS being very rude, but still...)
Oh, and the shift leaders would regularly switch out the times (and dates) on expired items that should have been thrown out. We did regularly disinfect the soda fountain spouts though, that was my job when I worked the closing shift.
I also worked at a school cafeteria, they were much more strict about following food safety procedures and ensuring cleanliness. Fast food places (and I'm sure other restaurants) are just lazy. The workers usually don't care and they don't have food handlers permits. (I think those are required now if you work in any food joint here in California, but when I worked at Taco Bell it was not required.)

My daughter is the Chef. I, a kitchen hand sometimes, and dishwasher, my main job. The cafe-restaurant is very particular with regulatory hygiene and sanitation. All the perishable food made daily are in the big cool room (fridge). Meat, vegies, bread and pastas are segragated meticulously. In our stock room, every thing is sealed in plastic boxes. No lids are left open even on rush hours.
My daughter-Chef is a stickler for cleanliness and health sanitation and delicious meals. I raised her at home, :-D :-D.

@andriaperry That's horrible about the roaches. One time, I was watching the nightly news and they had a story about a Chinese buffet that my mother and I went to a lot. There were so many rats in the ceilings and their droppings were falling in some of the food below. I called my mother and told her we were never going back to that place. She was about as happy as your dad.
That place closed down right away, and now it's a laundromat.
