The Motivation of Blank Spaces

At least 2 hours a day on my book

In spite of the incredible heat in my part of New Zealand, the hottest summer we've had in a long time, I've been soldiering on with my latest book. I've set myself a deadline of having the first draft completed by the time I go on holiday in May, sixteen weeks away. Sometimes at this time of year, when many others here are on summer holiday, I need a bit of motivation to keep me going. So, I set up my smiley face chart. Whenever I work for at least two hours on my book in a day I'm allowed to give myself a smiley face. A friend asked me what my reward is. I have no reward. The motivation is in those blank spaced days when no smiley face stares out at me. There are some days when other commitments mean I'm unable to research or write. There are some days when I'm able to fit in only an hour of working on my book. But, my rules are clear. I'm only allowed to award myself a smiley face if I've worked for at least two hours. Staring at blank spaces definitely motivates me to get on with the work. I'm a big kid at heart. I love drawing and colouring in those smiley faces. And I have the satisfaction of knowing I'll reach my goal of a completed first draft by May.

What a great motivator! I used something similar with my students as behavior modification.

Exactly! But when I was teaching I used it more as a reward than to be motivated by blank spaces. I hate blank spaces!

@DianneN and I taught first year kids and so they too enjoyed the power of stars! I admire teachers like you teaching special education, I knew you were a teacher, but had never realized this before. You are a star too

@valmnz I used a teacher made star system on a chart. I gave them out for everything from passing a test, using good manners, good behavior, doing homework, etc. Some stars were worth millions. I had the kids add up the "points" on Friday and the top three earned presents. Don't forget, I taught special education. My kids were super stars!!!! lol

This is a cute idea to stay motivated, I need to do something similar for important things I should take care of. We also had the hottest summer in 2017, it seems that global warming is true.

@valmnz I feel very bad when the temperature does not go under 22º Celsius during the night.

It can always be good to use some things as motivators. I'm sure that it will help and that you'll make it. Best of luck!

@just4him it's more the blank spaces without a smiley face that motivate me. The horror of nothing achieved that day.

@valmnz Oh, okay. I can see it would be a great motivator to see all those smiley faces looking at you.

It's often the small things that keep us going isn't it? Love your smiley faces.
