The Controversy Over Graying Hair: Facts and Myths

Graying is age related. Everything starts to change in our bodies as we grow older and our hair follicles produce less melanin, the pigment that gives your hair its color. Then why do some of us prematurely gray?
Well, the obvious reason is genetics. If one or both of your parents went gray when they were younger, it’s very likely that you will, too. But are there any other reasons one can have graying hair you ask? Apparently yes! If you want to delay the graying process for as long as possible avoid smoking. There have been proven studies that this habit can lead to premature graying.
Other reasons cited are medical conditions such as thyroid disorders, anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, and vitiligo. "Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition in which the cells that make pigment (melanocytes) are destroyed, resulting in patches of hair and skin that become white."
On the reverse side, there are some wife's tales regarding premature graying that are not true, they are just myths. Although you may have heard otherwise, there isn’t any conclusive evidence showing that chronic stress gives you gray hair. According to research there is no direct connection, although many of our American Presidents would disagree. Another myth is plucking out gray hair results in two or more grey hairs coming back in its place. That is not true, but unfortunately, it will not eliminate that grey hair from growing back either. Finally, one who dyes their hair will damage and speed up the graying process. It may damage the hair but it will not cause your hair to gray sooner. Of course, you may want to keep that fact secret to convince your teenager from dying his hair blue.
In closing, gray hair happens differently for every person, so just because your friend has greying hair it is something that will happen to you. So, now that you know a few facts how's your hair color doing?

I’m proud of my gray hairs (I’m not fully gray-headed yet, but I’m only 58). I earned them!!!

@dgobucks226 I really don't mind the white and my husband doesn't mind them either and his opinion is the one that counts the most.

My one grandfather had no gray. My Dad hair turned white as a ghost after a period of gray. Mine is still dark brown although a few white hairs have popped up. As you say, we'll see?

I turned 40 and now my hair has started graying. i am not using any color or dye so far. I do natural heena once in 3 months. That works well as it is good conditioner and nourishes hair.

I think proper conditioning is so important to maintain healthy hair. Many use shampoos with harsh chemicals which will dry out and damage the follicles.

@arunima25 That's true! I know for me I do not shampoo every day. It dries out my hair.

@dgobucks226 Heena is safe as it's a natural conditioner.. But too frequent use of it makes the hair rough and dry.

I was starting to get grey in my 30s. It is inherited on my Mom's side. Ever since then, I color it because even though now I am 53, I am not quite ready to go all grey yet.

My family does have some anemic genes, and yes, quite a few of us got grey hair even in our late teens. I was not that unlucky even if I have always been very anemic. I am waiting for my hair to be silver all over (right now, it is not too artistically grey alas! ).

I understand. The little grey I have is in the neckline and temples but my hair covers over it nicely. My grandfather never had much if any grey as I remember so hopefully I take after him. My Dad is completely gray/white. So will see. As you say silver all over is much better than a two-tone look, lol.

Many do take that risk in the name of vanity don't they? As you pointed out there are many harmful chemicals found in the hair dying process. Here are some of the ones mentioned:
ammonia,
peroxide,
p-phenylenediamine,
diaminobenzene,
toluene-2,5-diamine,
resorcinol etc.

My hair could probably use a dye job at the moment..I am mostly gray, if I don't color it.
