cake craving granted

i've been overworked and feeling a little resentful, and started fantasizing about cakes to feel appreciated.
was i surprised to see a box of chocolate mousse in the fridge!
what a sweet coincidence!
what's even more surprising is it was marked down from 500 pesos (US$ 9.72) to only 300 pesos (US$ 5.83) - a 40% discount. nice!
the consume-before date on the box is january 31st.
i guess they're strict about the shelf-life since it's a perishable item.
but you know what? even if they sold it on january 31st, and i happened to be at the mall and saw it, i'd still buy it to take advantage of that price.
it's something we'll consume immediately anyway.
would you do the same?
when The French Baker opened many years ago, it created a stir when they would sell their products at half price before closing every night.
it seems that new bakeshops like BreadTalk are doing the same, but only at 30% off.
are there food stores in your area that sell everything at a discount at the end of the day?

you can just reheat it and it's still good so win-win for both seller and buyer.

@hereandthere I usually cut the bread in slices and freeze it. I take out of the freezer and re-heat only the bread I need.

! I love a good deal! I figure depending on what it is, a couple days after the expiration date is probably fine. The bakeries here don't seem to do the end of the day discount (but some might have a day(s) old rack). Our local Korean markets do half off their packaged hot items after a certain time at night.

Good that you got your cake craving satisfied.
I'm a big fan of sales such as the one that French Baker does. I even find myself lining up and waiting before 8pm in one of their branches.

part of me likes the convenience of our increasingly 24/7 world, but part of me is bothered by it. for example, i found out we're going to have a convenience store here soon.

@hereandthere Back in the good old days ie when I was young, shops shut each day for lunch and shut at lunchtime on Saturdays. Banks opened at 10am and shut at 4pm. There were hardly any shops open on the weekends. All the shops shut for four days over Easter and at least two days over Christmas. We would think our throats had been cut if this happened nowadays.

There are some places that sell baked goods at a discount all the time. Many doughnut places around us have a 50% off on day old the next day.

All of the stores in this area do it, as some money made is better than none. Its impossible to know just how much is going to sell that day, so there is always something available. It changes each day in my closest store to my home.

Haven't really noticed since I'm not really into cakes. I like BreadTalk but I never bought anything there on discount.
I wouldn't buy the cake though if the expiration date comes soon because we hardly ate sweets and it would only go to waste.

Yes, there is a restaurant in my area where they sell food buy one take one when it's almost time for them to close. I go there a lot and bought, why not? I took advantage of the buy one take one. It saves me. I also told my friends about it and they go there a lot now too.

when it comes to buy one-take one, both food and non-food, i still make sure it's something we really use or like. it's good that you also let others know about it.

even the bakeries here in our neighborhood (panaderia) sell their excess pandesal at a discount in the afternoon until evening.
the cake mentioned in the post was red ribbon. for other bakeshops that offer discounts, here's an article i found online:
