Why do cats feel the need to be up high? Do they like looking down at us mere humans and like our looking up at them as if to "worship" them? Remember cats were once viewed as gods in Ancient Egypt and I don't think they've forgotten that fact. Photo of my Ouija sitting up high on top of my computer desk and doing his "Bast" impersonation

They enjoy surveying the terrain.

He does do a great Bast impersonation. Harmony would like to sit up on my tall dressers, and one time I caught her on top of the fridge.

Maybe because they descended from ambush predators before they were domesticated so it's still part of their natural instinct.

Cats love rats. All the rats in our house are all gone after we introduced a cat. I just love cats.

Cats just like to climb and go up and up and up really high until they can look down at us and say meow.

Because that's where they belong, on top of the world! My cat is often up on her high post. She likes to see everything from atop. She's like "I want to see the whole of my property!"

Actually, being both a small predator and prey to larger things, high is good. They can look down for things to catch and most of those things that would eat them, can't get up. Even larger birds can't always get them because they are too big to fit between the branches around them. And in rocks, they mostly will find a nook they can get in that something can't come down from behind and/or above them.

I also think that they like having a high vantage point to attack their victims. Not all cats are domesticated.

I have no idea how the cat gets up on a high shelf in the garage. He has to claw and scramble to get on the bed.
