Fresh eggs

At the bottom of this writing is a little poem. I've written one about eggs and Spring another time. That one was a metaphor. You can take this as you want. At least I continue to write! (28 dittys??) Oh horrors. The beauty and the wonder of taking a fresh egg out of the straw. It never ceases to amaze me. I am more comfortable with fur companions but have slowly come to appreciate chickens and ducks and turkeys. One bird that I admit to being defeated by is the goose. Too large for me and they can get mean, with those huge wings. Not for me. A hen is mostly nice though they get hungry and have the ability to fly up at me. So here is the latest ditty: She walks the hens into their coop the long stick taps the black then the broad beamed Orpington, rounding through the wire gate their gabbles light in the afternoon gloom.

@andriaperry You might enjoy it. I do not get out there every week and shovel their coop but they look plenty healthy and for sure are energetic. I would not do at all well if my hubby wasn't good at making coops and wire runs. We had to totally pen the hens up cause of the predator issue. I wish I could let them out more but then again that means me trying to figure where are they laying those eggs??? I dig greens and bring that to the hens. They love that.

Eventually we'll have a chicken coup to keep them safe and a heat light for warmth. I love fresh eggs. Years ago I had several and daily fresh eggs to cook for breakfast or use in baking.

@noni1959 I'm grateful that my hubby can make buildings. Our coop is not this year's model but it gets the job done. We have a simple heat lamp in there for the henseven though its not horribly cold this year.

@sallypup My son-in-law can build but he works away from home a lot and has so many other projects when he gets here. Maybe this summer we can convert an old dog run near the shop. Add some roofing, siding, etc.

@noni1959 Dog runs are nifty. If I were to have a goat I'd put him or her in the dog run. I love those runs. Sturdy enough that nobody can get out or in.

I like eggs too. These days the prices vary in Honolulu. It's now on sale at Marukai Wholesale Mart just up the street from where I live, for 2.99 a dozen large eggs. At CVS it was more than six dollars. I will get some on sale. At Easter at Times Supermarket medium dozen eggs went for 1.50. I'll see what eggs will go for this year at Easter. I see eggs only at the supermarkets or Walmart and Walgreens.

@sallypup Aloha! We do have chicken farms and ironically their doz. eggs cost more than mainland doz. eggs that's shipped in. Ka Lei Eggs are a local company. It's just that this city girl only knows eggs from supermarket. By the way there are feral roosters and chickens roaming Oahu. Sometimes they disappear from their sightings too.
