i was browsing MSN and saw a quiz, "Can You Pass A 7th Grade Vocabulary Test?"
according to the article, "93% of Americans can't pass a 7th grade vocabulary test."
well, i'm asian and based in asia, but i can't resist any quiz or poll or games, so i dived right in!
each sentence has one word in bold, and two answers to choose from to guess the correct meaning.
they also provided pictures to give you clues on the right answer.
actually, i just zoomed in on the bolded word and the choices.
some of the words were too simple to make a mistake from.
but i did! hahaha!
i made a mistake on "conserve"! the choices would really make you think.
but, hey, that was my only mistake so my score was 98%, instead of 100%.
not bad for a non-native, right?
other quizzes i tried
- famous quotes by completing the missing word. got careless and only scored 90%
- religious symbols - scored 89% because i honestly haven't seen some of the symbols or heard of the religion
- one last try: vehicles - 100%! yes! woo-hoo!
they have plenty of quizzes for all ages and interests, just scroll down the page on the link i provided.
aside from downloading games, doing sudoku and crossword puzzles, i think an online quiz once in a while is good for the brain, too.
you get to use context clues, deduction, remember forgotten facts and learn new ones!

@hereandthere I started and replied to 50 questions without errors, but I had to quit, it's long and I have other things to do.

Ow.. That's nice, I love to take tests. What I have now is vocabulary.com. They send me an email if I need to take the test, they monitors my improvements.

@hereandthere Yes, I did - I enjoy doing jigsaws online but that doesn't take much brain power. I do them while I'm listening to something.

That's a good idea to do quizzes from time to time. I felt my geography skills were very lacking so I've been learning all sorts of things about countries. I now know all the states of the US and their capitals, all the African countries, all the South American countries and just about all the European countries. Also the counties of England and Ireland and the 69 cities of the UK. Yay for me!

@hereandthere No, I think I'll stay away from the sciences. I tried the vocab quiz and got 100%.

@JudyEv i was really stumped on the definition of "conserve". it's funny how i got 100% on the vehicles even if i've never been or seen or used many of them. i don't even drive!

i'm a sucker for any quiz, even if i barely know anything about the topic and just guess at everything. just for fun and curiosity.

I didn't realized it was going to be so long. But I completed it. about 90 % was quite simple but the rest 10% a bit tricky. One or two I didn't know but guessed anyway. I guess wrongly. Two. But some of the choices were close and some was wrong which make it a matter of choosing the most correct answer, or the one closest to the meaning.
My score was 97% but I was careless with one. I enjoyed the exercise ...it's a good teaching tool. i didn't commit any to memory though.

I enjoy quizzes like this or any brain exercise games. If you know others like this share it to us again hehe I took the 7th grade vocabulary test, its quite long, I almost gave up but decided to go on. I got 96%. I have yet to try the other quizzes.
I like exercises like these, its both fun and good work out for the brain.
