As a tourist what do you look for?

Package tours take us to famous sights but I always wanted much more. I wanted to feel the place and I got do that when I spent a few days with my niece in New Jersey.
I travelled by a local train,a bus, went to a farmers' market and even to a fish market. I noticed it was so different from what I see in India. She then took me to a small park where her kids spend time. I visited a church and ate at restaurants. There were several run by those from other countries.
Shopping in Malls was great too. At the time I travelled we in India did not have many Malls. I went berserk just spending time in those Malls.
What do you look for as a tourist?

When I was in the US I was like a child specially at those Malls. I was left there to spend time. They went about their chores and came to pick me up much later (lol)

As a tourist I look for travel like a local, so a try to keep in touch with local people, so they can show me touristic and not touristic places.
But, in general, I always look for outdoors activities like national parks, I love hiking so that is my first choice before stay in downtown or museums,

Some travel agents offer packages that are interest specific which is a good thing as those who travel will in that group have common interests and therefore that tour should prove successful.

@allknowing Yes, I know, I use to travel by my own, so sometimes for me is more interesting visit a city with a local than with tourist, at the same time I save money.

That one never gets to do while on conducted tours. They are always in a hurry and that now I cannot dream of doing.

I usually travel on my own and I want to visit the local museums, eat at local restaurants and shop in the local stores especially grocery stores. So many things I don't see at home.

Wow nice. I haven't been tourist yet. but if i would, my first priority would have been the food place(restaurants, cafes etc) and chocolates. I am very fond of different texures of chocolates from different countries.

I often check the local souvenir as it will be the best gifts for my friends and family when I am back from the travel. Of course I will also check the local malls to see whether there are some nice food or snacks that I can bring back.

I prefer to have my own itinerary rather than join group tours. I want to live as a local in the places that I visit so I want to be immersed in their day to day living and culture.

That is what every tourist should look for. Sight seeing is fine but to immerse in the day to day life and culture makes a tour complete

The tour package normally includes those landscapes but not those mundane things which for me were experiences.

While I do like to sight see as I have said in my post there is more than just sight seeing. When I was in Germany I tried to remember a few expressions - I have learnt a bit of German - to use there (lol)

Basically an amusement park, great restaurants to eat good food and finding a water park.

I like you did the same things. I like to get free things like a chopstick package that has a restaurant name so to remember things. Now that I'm older, I sell the things I bought, or try to sell them anyway, on letgo.com. Many souvenir takes space and time to clean, so I didn't get many. Drinking in the atmosphere and to commit to memory sights, sounds and tastes so I can remember them as I do now. Digital pictures are good to take of family so you'll always have them with you. These are the things I like to do when I travel.
