Why I don’t always eat birthday cake

Have you ever watched kids blowing out the candles on their cakes? Those watching can’t help going through the motions. We used to light the candles several times so all the children could participate in blowing out the candles. I’m not sure if the candles were extinguished by the force of air or perhaps by spit! Whatever it was, I wasn’t too keen on sharing the cake afterwards. I think the birthday in the photo must have been our younger son’s (on the right) but the older one is obviously going for the big blow too. I’m in the background wearing a hand-crocheted top. What a long time ago this seems.

I've often thought about that - but gosh darnit I always end up eating a piece anyway! I don't care for frosting anymore . . . I figure if I fork off the icing and just eat the cake, then maybe I'm spit free .

Good idea to leave the icing behind and just eat the cake.

Adorable photo! I'd eat any birthday cake my grandkids blew on, spit or not. They are the only ones allowed to blow out their candles for good luck.

It's a nice tradition isn't it? Maybe I should have two cakes although we rarely have a cake at all any more.

@DianneN I like most desserts - the lighter ones anyway but I don't eat lollies, just chocolate if it's available.

Fortunately I am of an age where I don't usually have a Birthday cake ....except those 'special' Birthday that come around every ten years ! However when I do have one I don't have candles so this is never a problem for me . I do agree though that I was never very keen on eating cake that had candles on and blown out ....by children or adults .....all I could think of was all those germs !!!

The problem doesn't arise for us nowadays either but it was very real when the children were small.

Same thoughts. Do not eat birthday cake that people have to blow on.

That is not what we do here. Only the one whose birthday it is blows the cake and the fan above helps the candles to blow away (lol) So I eat the cake.

@JudyEv What about where an adult blows the candles? Will you still not eat it? Normally there is just one candle with the age number embossed on it.

@allknowing I'd eat an adult birthday cake. We always had 7 candles for a 7-year-old, 8 for an 8-year-old etc and to get them all blown out in one big breath often meant a bit of spit floating around. With adults we might have candles like you describe or we might have one for every decade. It depends on the person and what they want to do.

Fair enough. I don't think it is common here either but I always felt sorry for those who didn't get to blow out the candles so I'd light them a couple of times so all the kids could have a go. Hence no cake for me!

lol Adorable picture and honestly with all the fluids my kids shared with me all the time, a little spit was the last thing on my mind lol

YUCK! That is the reason I always got a cake for the kids and a much smaller cake for me to eat! (Usually two or three cupcakes that were iced just like the birthday cake. ) When we go to someone's birthday party, I always refused birthday cake!

A cupcake to hold the candles is a good idea. Pity I'll never need it - not unless I start to drool soon.

Gee I guess I really didn't give that much thought as I always eat a piece of the cake. Now I just might have to reconsider

Judy, you don't look old enough in the photo to have had kids already! When I first saw the photo--and before reading your post--I thought maybe that was you and your brothers in the photo!

@moffittjc I was 26 when I had the first boy and 28 when I had the second. For that era, it was probably about average.

I love birthday cakes! My favorite flavors are chocolate and mocha. Nowadays, it's common to see personalized design of cakes for any occasion - mostly are in fondant icing and they look so pretty to look at that I don't want to eat it! :-)

Oh, you make me realize that the birthday cake can indeed be with some spits because it was blown and when one blows it can't be helped by children to have some spit with the blow. Yuck!
