Aggressive Salesperson

I feel really annoyed at myself today because I had an encounter with an aggressive door to door salesperson earlier today. He was talking really fast and he kept saying insulting things that implied I needed his services. I'm a shy person and I got so flustered by him. I was trying to move indoors and he cornered me outside and told me to get my house mate so he could speak to him about buying his car and I went and did it like a fool, even after explaining that my house mate wouldn't be interested in selling his car. It felt as if he was in charge of everything and I wish I knew a good way of being assertive. Do any of you ever have problems like this and how do you deal with it?

I can be very assertive when necessary - I hate to let people get the better of me. That salesman is not very sensible.

Me too. Earlier I was not. And I used to be always unhappy. Now, I make others uncomfortable so that I am comfortable.

@vandana7 I think I will definitely have to learn to be more assertive so I don't feel like this again.

I am going to try and be calm and assertive the next time. To be honest, the man who came last time was so hyperactive and talkative it was like a bit of an assault of the senses. I have got some good advice here about how to deal with it.

Being in the profession of a Vet, I often get to meet Veterinary Medical rear from resentatives who behave more smarter than required! My only remedy to get rid of them is subject them to some technical question which is out of their course...this makes these people to shift their gears from fifth to first! Thanks dear @redurnet for the nice discussion!

There's no easy way to handle such people. You have to be tough.

@redurnet If your shyness gives you problems, here are few other suggestions: Let somebody else answer the door. Usually it's only salespeople that come to the door and so don't answer. You can look out the window and see who it is first and if you don't recognize them, don't answer. Install a speaker-bell and only answer through it to see who it is and find out what they want that way.

You are right. I have had another experience with a rude sales assistant recently and I just think I must look and sound like a very shy person so perhaps people feel they can say what they want to me. I hope I can be tougher in future though.

I tell them that I'm not interested and close my door firmly.

I hope I can do this the next time instead of feeling like they are talking me into doing things I don't want to do!

If you get stuck where you can't just shut the door on them, just keeping saying no thanks. Don't say why because then they'll come back with a counter argument. Just keep to the 'no' and eventually they'll give up. Easier said than done I know but it does work.

@redurnet In some instances at least it's they who are being rude and if they won't leave nicely, you really don't have too many options but to be rude back.

It is quite difficult. I guess I will just have to remember that it is not personal if I am curt with them and I'm not being rude and that also I am not obliged to answer their questions. I always feel really vulnerable when they arrive at my door and start asking questions about me and my house.

I have encountered a few people like that, but I refuse to be intimidated by such people. The worst people were the ones in the streets promoting PPI claims. They really annoyed me with questions such as "Can you really afford to turn money down?". My usual response was to tell them it was none of their business what I can afford to do.

I simply say no, or I don't have money or have the same item for them to leave.

You don't need to be polite with pushy salespeople, tell them to bugger off!! I know that is very rude in the UK lol Then tell them you need to get inside to take your Ebola treatment!! That should send them running lol
