Western Australia makes world history - yay for us!

Sturt's Desert Pea

I guess I come across as pretty pro-Australia and even more so pro-West Australia. I make no apologies for liking where I live. After all, someone needs to live among the snakes, spiders and crocodiles. But now our state has made world history again. We’ve (note I’m identifying personally with this event) have just installed the first-ever female Anglican Archbishop. The new Archbishop of Perth is Kay Goldsworthy who says she wants to help restore trust in the institution. This follows the retirement of the previous Archbishop, Roger Herft, who admitted he had "let down" abuse survivors in the Diocese of Newcastle, where he had previously served. Archbishop Goldsworthy was one of the first Anglican women to be ordained in Australia. Then in 2008, in St George's Cathedral, she became a Bishop. So hopefully this will augur in a new era for women in religion. And I've chosen one of our lovely wildflowers, Sturt's desert pea, for an image.

This is a beautiful flower. I see that your religion is a lot more open minded than Catholic religion.Still now women allowed for Catholics.

@JudyEv We never go to Church Judy. My husband was not born in a Catholic family. He was raised Catholic because his mother feared for him. He was born soon after WWII and his father was Jew.

Not that it matters but Anglicanism is not really 'my' religion. Vince was brought up by very staunch Catholics but we rarely go to church nowadays. I didn't convert when we married but I've always supported him when he was an acolyte, etc.

Sturt's desert pea is rare ! A great cheer definitely went up from the women in religion over there. It marks a turning point where women can compete on an equal footing with men for Anglican Archbishop.

@JudyEv Yes I agree. Congratulations again! I bet Australia is awesome. I some times wonder why I am where I am as far as where I live. But God knows what He is doing so I just rest in Him and trust His leading and guiding. We are blessed to have a one bedroom cottage with a large kitchen and a large living room. It also has a large shower, a nice size laundry room and a pantry. It works for us. But our youngest Son wants us to move to NC. It's so Not happening! They love it because of the weather and theres lots to do. My husband and I are on a fixed income and don't have the luxury to just go out and eat whenever we want or go shopping for whatever we want. God takes good care of us we have all we need!

@Butchcass4 We don't often eat out. Vince enjoys cooking and we save a small fortune by cooking at home.

Thanks. We are sometimes regarded as the 'poor cousin' by the Eastern states of Australia so it's nice when we're the first from time to time.

There's no fault in Aussie pride! Do you in WA feel a separation from the east of NSW and VIC?

Very definitely. We've long been classed as the underdog but for some time now we've been providing the bulk of the money for the country in the form of mining..

@JohnRoberts Yes, the money from WA goes into a melting pot and is divvied out to all the states and sometimes we think we don't really get our fair share back.

Aussies never used to be very patriotic but it's changed a little over the last decade or two. I think we all realise more just how lucky we are.

@teamfreak16 Thanks. There are still lots of things that could be fixed. Poverty, homelessness, violence - all seem more prevalent than they once were or perhaps all the new medias just help spread bad news further and faster.

It grows naturally in the desert and some years when the season is ideal for it, it appears as a lush red carpet.

I think it can only bring good. The churches are suffering in the light of so many child abuse claims against them and hopefully a female in the role may help in the reconciliation process.

Lovely flower and congratulations! Glad to hear this. I remember ages ago when I lived in the states there was a pastor in the Latvian Lutheran congregation. He was always kind of rough around the edges so to say. Not a pastor you would want to confide in. He was moving away and suddenly a lady pastor showed up. It made all the difference in the world. She was kind, understanding and just the kind of pastor you would want to rely on.

@judyev That flower kind of looks like a woman archbishop dressed in splendid attire. My church has had women making the place colourful and sane for over 40 years now. Best move we ever made.

Years back I don't think Australians were particularly patriotic, certainly not as much so as the Americans but that has changed nowadays. And it needed to. For too long we took our good fortune for granted.
