In India we are having the festival of ‘Holi’ tomorrow where this festival is is celebrated by applying colors to others to celebrate the happiness and joy!
This festival is celebrated to mark the victory of Devotion on the wickedness!
As per the Hindu mythology the Wicked Holika , a female Demon was sister of the King Hiranyakashyap.
This king wanted to establish himself as the King of the World and he used to kill all the people supporting Lord Vishnu, the God running this World.
Unfortunately his own son ‘Prahlad’ turns out to be a great devotee of Lord Vishnu at very young age and this fact was not acceptable to him and he tried many a times to kill his son, facing failure every time.
He wanted to make another attempt and asked his sister Holika to take young Prahlad into her lap and sit on the pyre to set it alight.
He was sure that by doing so his son would be burnt in the fire in the clutches of Holika and thus he will be eliminated.
But then instead of the boy ‘Prahlad’ dying in the fire ‘Holika ‘ met her death and the boy escaped without any injuries.
To mark this victory of the devotion against the Wickedness this festival is celebrated in India with colors.
Tonight a symbolic funeral pyre will be burnt in the night and tomorrow people congratulate each other and apply colors to each other!
This festival spread the message of happiness, peace and unity in the Society!
Though it is Hindu festival, this festival is celebrated with the people of other religions too. Like Muslims, Parsees, Christians , Sikhs etc. they participate in this festival happily and spread the message of Unity in diversity in the Country!
Does any other country celebrate any festival with colors like we celebrate Holi in India?
Wishing you all happy Holi and a great time! Have fun and frolic dear friends!

Yes, we also have festivals in summer which look like Holi - people buy paints and have fun in the main park of my city. It is not a tradition, just we stole your celebration to have fun without any special sense or meaning for it When I was younger, we always went there with my friends

@sol_cee paints are not recommended but some people mix with paints which have harmful effects. But we avoid such things.

Sorry for being late. I had two days holidays and I was not around here. Hope you celebrated the festival greatly.
Holika was blessed with a boon, fire can't harm her but she did not aware that this boon is effective only when she enters the fire alone. Since she entered the fire along with the baby the boon did not help her. With the blessings of Lord Vishu the boy escaped.
In South we never celebrated Holi. Honestly I do not appreciate the way people celebrate Holi here. I feel most of the people do not aware how it should be celebrated in fact. How it is important. They are happy only on throwing colours or waters prior one week of the festival. I got annoyed when children throw water baloons on me when I am on the way to office. The festival is meant to share the happiness and good things, not annoying any one.

@AKRao24 Yeah quiet but nice- we played a bit at home.
We also have had a community dinner in our society, where we also had a musician singing ghazals and bollywood songs.

@AKRao24 Yeah the function was well organized, though the dinner cost went up a bit this year.
Yet I think it was worth it. But we also had a song like Daler Mehendi's "Ye Kudiyan Shehr Diyan... Nakhre bade..." (Oh these girls of the city.. having so many tantrums...)

@AKRao24 and which is your favorite Ghazal?
I like "Wo Kagaz ka Kashti" by Jagjit Singh and "Kisi Nazar ko tera Intezaaar aaj bhi hai" by Bhupinder Singh and Asha Bhonsle (that was from Aitbaar 1985 movie).
