A hard day's night maybe? Red eyes on an oystercatcher

While we were in the town of Denmark in Western Australia recently we came across this sea-bird fossicking for food on a deserted beach. When I consulted my bird book later, I discovered it was a pied oystercatcher.
My book says that they are large, dumpy waders found mainly on sandy beaches and estuaries. Their long blade-like beaks are ideal for opening bivalved molluscs.
I thought he looked quite handsome with his black and white plumage. The legs, beak and eyes of the adult are red but juveniles have brown eyes. I always like to know the names of new birds that I see but it isn’t always easy to work out what they are. Do you have many birds where you live?

We have a lot of native birds, plus a lot of migratory birds. Currently, there are hundreds of varieties of birds here that are visiting for the winter. In about another month, many of them will head back up north. But in the meantime, we have some amazing bird watching opportunities!

@moffittjc They certainly poke around a lot. It's quite possible they are enemy agents in disguise. ![](/Content/images/emotes/sad.gif)

There were a few birds that looked like this that hung out at one of the motels we were staying in. Not sure if it's the same species, but same color pattern. Pretty.

We do not have a wide bird variety in California. The only birds at the seashore are seagulls.

I love animals and birds too. I'm not fond of cities or towns.
