While we were away, the skinks did play

We got home from my sister’s a few hours ago. We had a combined garage (yard) sale which went off very well and we were happy with the result. When we got home I went out the laundry door to water my azalea and look at my poor butternut! Something has chewed a huge piece out of it. My money (meaning if I were a betting person, I’d bet on it) is on the skink, a type of lizard. We’ve always liked having them around but I don’t really want them eating the few vegetables we manage to grow. An additional worry is that if they develop a liking for butternuts they’ll be attacking them while they are still ripening on the vines. The shelves you can see will be filled with wood once winter arrives. Because of the risk of bushfires, in summer we remove all the wood.

Good news and bad news.Happy to know about the success of the garage sales. But the Skink chewing on your butternut is really bad news.Hopefully they would not make a habit of chewing on the vegetables.

I'll have to store the butternuts inside now that they know about them.

@JudyEv You give them milk and they do this?We can't expect Skinks to be thoughtful.Better luck next time.

@silvermist I'll give him the benefit of a doubt and say that perhaps he thought I'd put it there for him.

Glad you had a successful garage sale. Sorry to hear they were eating your vegetable but I do like what a skink looks like. Are they friendly?

They are very timid. We put milk out for them sometimes but they haven't really become any less skittish.

There's really a lot of lizards there in your place and they don't seem to be afraid of people.

We have to be very quick and quiet to take a photo of them as they are afraid of people. I crop the photos so you can see the lizards more easily.

I wonder if the skinks would eat dandelions, if they did you could grow them around your veggie garden so that they'd have something to eat.

Thanks for mentioning that @JudyEv I wanted to get sunflower seeds and try to grow some again. I love sunflowers.

That's a really good idea. My mother used to grow sunflowers around her apple tree and the parrots would eat the sunflowers and mostly leave the apples alone.

@rebelann In France we saw acres and acres of sunflowers but for some days we always seemed to be on the wrong side so they all had their faces turned away but eventually we got a good photo of them.

Judy, congrats on the yard/garage sale. Is there something that can be put around the things you do not want the skinks to get to?

I think the melons and butternuts are ripe now so I'll pick them all and store them inside.

@JudyEv Judy, great idea. So, if they are inside then the skinks cannot get to them, correct?

The skinks are very timid but if there is no-one around then they aren't afraid to go exploring to see what they can find to eat.

There seems no end to it at the moment. Then the wind blew away my rose protectors so I've had to redo them. I wonder what the next little surprise will be.

I see the hole in the butternut ! We get lizards, but I don't think we have "skinks". We have seen gigantic ones in reptile shops though . . . do you get those??

@JudyEv Our little garden lizards are teeny things - we would freak over anything that is a foot long! Butternut squashes are not soft either - I sure wouldn't want to be bitten by a skink!

Our adult skinks get to about a foot long I guess. I've cropped the bottom photo so you get a good look at him. He has nibbled away at the butternut. That isn't just one bite out of it.

@JudyEv That would make more sense then! It's obviously hard to tell that from the small photo! Just look around for a fat skink, and that should tell you who the culprit is! haha

You're probably right about who took a chuck out of your butternut squash. He was a hungry lizard. Good idea to remove the wood in summer.

I wouldn't think they would go for those. We have salamanders around here in the summer. I always thought they ate bugs. I think we may have skinks too but they don't get that big.

Judging by the size of the hole the skinks surely loved your butternut. I think you should study a strategy now.

They eat moths and bugs, probably worms and smaller lizards, also vegetable matter (like butternuts!).
