after losing money twice, she now takes them with her

a cook at an eatery said she lost money twice at home.
she even had a feeling whoever entered their home lived in their area, too.
she doesn't trust banks because she had a relative who lost more than 100,000 pesos in her account.
so i said, "if you still want to keep your money at home, then maybe keep them in several places so you don't lose everything."
i even joked about putting it in the fridge! hahaha!
she said, "i take them all with me now since i'm here at the eatery from morning till night.
also because the second time it happened, my daughter forgot to lock the house."
i understand her paranoia, but i don't think it's safer for her to bring all her money every day, either.
what would you do - still keep money at home in different places? or bring them all with you every day? or open a bank account?

i prefer to bank them, too, and just withdraw now and then. i know other people have safes at home, but they also tend to get stolen.

@LadyDuck true because here up to 500k is insured, or as someone suggested, open accounts in several banks

@hereandthere If you have a safe that has been built enclosed into a wall it is "more or less" safe, but a Bank account is safer.

i think it is still best to keep the money in the bank. If she is wary to have all her money stolen, she can probably spread her money on 2 banks. This way, in case something happens to the first bank, there is still money left in the second one.

@hereandthere yes something like that. Carrying it with her can make her a prime target of these thieves at the night (or even in broad daylight!). I feel bad but we just can't really be sure these days.

having two banks is also a good idea. it's the same with having suppliers. it's better to have two, than just one.

I don't think its safe for her to tell everyone that she keeps her money with her & at her place.

no, i don't think she told other people. we were discussing someone else who owed her money and she shared that with me. she probably feels i'm trustworthy enough and she's been frustrated by these events.

i'd do the same. i was hoping to know how her relative lost money in the bank, but she didn't know the details.

@DianneN but that was all she needed to hear to continue her mistrust of banks. i just wish the money stays safe

@hereandthere That seemed odd to me. Banks don't lose money.

I put money in the freezer of our motor-home when we were travelling. The gas ran out and I threw out all the food in the freezer including the money which I'd forgotten about. Hours later we were in the middle of the city when I realised what I'd done. Someone was looking out for us as we found the money in the rubbish bin at the caravan park.

thank god no one saw it and it wasn't time for trash pick-up!
in my parent's hometown there still isn't a bank so they have to travel to the next town.

@hereandthere To make it worse Vince had just had his wallet stolen which was why we were in the city searching for a bank.

@sw8sincere i think that's the reason she brings her money now, because her daughter forgot to lock the door the second time they lost money. i only have paypal and bank accounts, and don't do online transactions.

@hereandthere I live with my mom but due to her age she sometimes forget to lock the door when she go out somewhere. So it is better to be safe than sorry and besides I am glad we have this coins.ph wallet here in the philippines it's much safer to store our money from there than on a physical wallet. Don't you think so?

@hereandthere It's good that she trusts you that way . . . I'd just be scared about who else might be listening.

You can trust a bank when it is a reputable one. Not the ones, not the small ones, and definitely not a bank that offers high interest in your deposits. There's Metrobank, BPI, and BDO.. There are the highly rated banks that will never go bankrupt. If you are afraid that your money might be lost, then spread your money to different banks that's covered under PDIC.

@hereandthere It must have been her relative's fault and not the banks.
We have invested millions with those banks for many years now and have not lost a single centavo.

she said her relative's bank was one of those you mentioned, but when i asked her how it happened, she said she doesn't know the details, just that more than 100k disappeared so it convinced or reaffirmed her avoidance of banks.

@hereandthere I agree. It is better to have an option money transfer using a mobile app. It would be safer, too. I do this if I can't go out.

that's what i do, too. it's understandable if there were no banks or they're far away, but we're here in metro manila. but that's her choice so i can only hope nothing bad happens.

she doesn't really want to. i do know that in some places where there are no banks yet, or if they're too far away, they have no choice but to keep it at home.

@hereandthere Yes, that's true accident might happen on the street you'll never know so it's safer to put on them on the bank.

Sorry to hear that. That is sad and traumatizing on her part. For me, I would still place it in a reputable bank, for security purposes only. Leaving it in a house may not be safe and might cause her more stressed. Bring a little on her way to work. Bringing all the money may cause her more harm.

That's a serious problem, if you can't secure your money in the bank were would you secure it? It's not safe to bring all of her money either. She could easily get robbed right there. This is why I rarely use my debit card.
