Have you heard? The Scientology Channel launches on cable and satellite systems tonight. What's this going to be, 24 hours of Tom Cruise jumping up and down on Oprah's couch??? Scientology was founded by a science fiction author in the 1950s. The church is quite controversial for a number of their practices, and have been accused by former members of things like kidnapping, brainwashing, and total control tactics that we used to associate with people like Jim Jones. Last July I "cut the cord" with cable. Now all I watch is MLB (I have a subscription and get every baseball game, and can watch previous games). A Scientology channel makes me glad I did that. I won't be watching that, I'll be listening to this:

We don't have a Scientology church here. How do they make new members?

I have no idea. The accusations are that they use cultic practices like brainwashing and sleep/food deprivation. Here in America they're thought of as a "cult" and "extreme," even by the "politically correct" crowd. They are money-hungry, so it would stand to reason that they don't branch out to countries that are perceived as "poor" economically.

Never a fan of Scientology. I am confused with their teachings and principles.

You aren't the only one who's confused or not a fan.

@mlgen1037 -- the problem with "freedom of religion" is that you can proclaim anything a "religion" and get a tax exemption for it.

@FourWalls Yeah. Why is it even a religion? I am not being mean or biased. I had a homework on them during my hs days, and sadly I did not get much information from them since they are like a "secret" religion or something. I just got familiarized with them because of Tom Cruise, John Travolta and his wife. I also watched documentaries on them.

I have heard very little about Scientology but I do remember tabloids talking about Tom Cruise being into it. When little I read up on it sounded pretty crazy to me.
