Chickens are surprisingly easy to look after

I'm at my parents' house for the week, with Leonard, while they're away in their caravan, they've had a stressful day but hopefully they'll be able to relax now. Their garden's flooded with today's heavy rain and the tenfoot behind the houses is the same, so they had a job getting the caravan out onto the road, and when they got to their destination they realised that the kitchen taps in the caravan can't be used because there's a leak Other than that everything's fine All I have to do is look after the chickens, and that just entails letting them out of their bed in the morning, cleaning it out and putting clean newspaper and straw in when I collect their eggs, then shutting them back in bed at night. They take themselves to bed each night when it gets dark, so thankfully I don't have to convince them it's bedtime because they certainly wouldn't listen to me The most difficult thing for me this week will be to carry on with my diet, I feel like I'm on holiday when I stay here and that makes me think I should be able to eat like I'm on holiday

Please don't tell my kids that - they want chickens here ! I say find that happy middle ground - be on your diet, but be ok to indulge a little, just a little .

@LilyBeBack I know the feeling . . . once you cave, it just gets worse . Well it's good the chickens are all set like that - all is well it sounds as long as their routine is kept up. Yah, my kids wouldn't like waking up to any sort of alarm clock !

@much2say I wouldn't know where to start if I had my own chickens and had to start from scratch, and even Leonard doesn't get up as early as they do I ended up eating really unhealthily for the last week, which was disappointing but I'm back to my healthy diet now and I feel much better

I wish I could find a middle ground but I have to have strict rules otherwise I go mad and eat everything I was fine for two months but over the last couple of weeks for some reason I've had really bad cravings and they're just getting stronger Haha it's only easy for me to look after them because they've already got their routine and their home set up, getting everything set up for them is really expensive and hard work and they're up early every single morning so sleeping in is never allowed! Just let your kids know that bit

The only problem is when I let them out into the garden and then have to persuade them to get back in their coop

Thanks If it's still flooded tomorrow I'm going to let Leonard splash around in it before bath time

I sometimes housesit for a friend who has chickens. Yes, they are easy to care for, and fresh eggs are great.

Yeah it's good getting eggs! My parents rescue their hens and sometimes they lay loads but sometimes none at all. It balances out though
