American Idol returns - I’m not impressed

I watched the reincarnation of American Idol last night. Although it’s early into the new season, my initial reaction is that I wasn't impressed. The contestants were mediocre except for Noah, the pink-cheeked guy with the big voice and the piano.
I was also unimpressed with the three judges, especially Katy Perry, who planted a kiss on one of the male contestants who claimed he’d never kissed a girl before. To me the kiss thing was stupid and looked staged. Luke Bryan was ok, nothing to write home about. Lionel Richie appeared as perhaps the only one taking his judging duties seriously and not acting like a juvenile. Host Ryan Seacrest appeared as usual, lurking behind closed doors, apparently not shut out by the rumors of sexual abuse, not yet anyway.
I’m probably not being fair, since it’s only two hours into the new show. One thing for sure, nasty as he was, Simon Cowell brought a lot of excitement to the original show and so did phenomenal contestants like Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood and Adam Lambert. I didn’t see any signs of excitement last night. Maybe I’ll be proved wrong.

It definitely has gone downhill. I don't think this new version will bring it back to what it once was.

@LindaCPearson I hate it when they are rude to the contestants and I cringe for some of the contestants too so best just to watch highlights.

That's a smart way to enjoy the show without all the silly stuff.

Spoiler alert, A cute boy will win and all female contestants will lose because the voting public is composed of teenage girls with smartphones who thinks he is cute but they will not buy his album.

You're probably right. It usually is a cute guy that wins.

I really loved the original show when it started years ago. It eventually lost much of its appeal. It will be hard to compete with those early years.

I watched it and I'm used to the old judges but like you said maybe the show ill grow on us. There were some pretty talented contestants like the guy that sang the Sinatra song and the girl whose father was her best friend and yes the big boy playing the piano.

@LindaCPearson Yes, I just watched it tonight and there were some great singers, like the man that was hit by a car. What an amazing girlfriend he has.

I hope you're right and the show continues. Last night's show was a bit better. I liked several of the contestants.
