Have you ever eaten something ‘disgusting’?

It’s kinda ironic that my first time to eat the dish photographed above was not in the Philippines but in another country. Sisig, as it is called, is a traditional Filipino dish made of chopped pig's head parts (face, snout, cheeks, ear) along with pork liver and pork belly. It is usually served in a sizzling platter spiced with chili peppers, garnished with chopped onions and slices of small green citrus fruit called calamansi, and finally mixed with raw egg. It is a popular appetizer that goes perfectly with beer.
Maybe you’ve heard of sisig before, courtesy of famous chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain who started his crusade to introduce sisig to the world in a CNN interview. Words traveled fast and now, many sisig variations came to life.
I ate the original version in a Filipino restaurant in Nagoya. And my verdict? It’s actually not disgusting. It didn’t have the calamansi but there was a slice of lemon to cut through its savory taste. My friend almost choked up on the liver and some tiny snout parts but she’s still alive. I’d definitely try it again. Another helping, say on the weekend, won’t hurt. Plus beer of course.

I would probably try it although it looks a little like something i would give the cat! . I think to most people it's important that their food looks appetising and that really doesn't! My partner has cooked up a few dishes that look vile but actually taste ok. I will usually try something before dismissing it.

Oh gosh no way could I eat that. I thought it looked tasty until I heard what it was lol. I do not eat meat and this seems worse then most meats. One time at my brother in law's daughters birthday party the only thing that didn't have meat in it was rice so I ate that. It had brown little pieces in with the rice and I didn't realize what it was until later asking and was told it was gizzards

I don't think I would try this combination. However, in Latvia, they make very tasty pig head cheese and it always tastes really great. I have also eaten beef lung and really enjoyed it.

@sol_cee yes, if you cut a thin slice. But mostly it is eaten cut into chunks with a bit of vinegar poured over or lemon juice squeezed on. All you need to know is here

I'm not a fan of liver and would pass on the raw egg out of fears of salmonella, but cook the egg and I'm all over that. Sounds delish! Weirdest things I ever ate were uni sushi and sawagani. (For the non-Japanese people reading this, uni is raw sea urchin and sawagani are little river crabs that you eat whole, shell and all).I also have had alligator sausage. I wouldn't eat uni again (too slimy) or sawagani (too much crunch, not enough meat), but I'd have that alligator sausage again any day. It was awesome!

@sol_cee The Filipino comunity is giant here. I didn't notice about the food however, until I went to that restaurant. Make sense really, re: wherever there is a certain ethnic group, there will surely be some demand for their food, won't it? (More Italian, Greek, Malaysian and Mexican food here however, guess the Filipino are more shy re: eating out? )

I think a good cook can make almost anything taste good and a bad cook can make almost anything taste bad.

The only disgusting thing I 'tried' to eat is corned beef from a can. I couldn't look at it without gagging. The look and smell of it made me think "dog food" and that was it...
