Okay, Here's What I Discovered About Bleach and Urine

The other day I got upset because bleach was left in my toilet and bleach and Ammonia mix together to produce chlorine gas, which is very dangerous and urine contains ammonia. Well, after much research on the topic (I was seriously considering going to the hospital a little while ago), I discovered through numerous forums that urine straight from the body contains very little ammonia. Old urine will break down into ammonia, but straight up from the bladder, there is very little in it. If there is, you have other problems! So in the case of bleach being left in my toilet, there was very little, if any chlorine gas produced, and even if it was, none of it was toxic enough to be toxic to the body. The real irritation to my lungs was the bleach fumes themselves, which had spread throughout my bedroom. It is a lung irritant, and set off my anxiety levels when I couldn't breathe well. Right now, I'm still suffering difficulties breathing, but most of it is from anxiety and a potent case of acid reflux I had yesterday. I'm trying to be calm, but I got so worked up over it, that it will probably be bothering me for several more days.

You should air out your house especially your bedroom as best as you can to get all the fumes out. Hope you feel better and the fumes dissipate.

I did it until I couldn't smell anything anymore on the weekend, but just for peace of mind, I did today as well, since I could open them without freezing. :)

Oh gosh..can you get fresh air immediately? And air out the place too? I know that smell I have experienced it before. I dont blame you for not being calm. You need very little bleach to sanitize toilets. Sorry this happened to you.

I thought it was in my dish sink, I never knew it had been put in my toilet - who cleans a toilet with bleach! XD That's just dangerous. I inhaled the fumes for about an hour until I realized that it was worse than I thought, then I opened up the doors and got the fumes out. That's why I don't like my mother cleaning things around my house, she does so irresponsible in a small living space. It's okay. Thank you for your concern. :) Just rationalizing it all helps reduce my anxiety, which is pretty powerful.

@Courage7 Kicking my anxiety is difficult indeed. I have a feeling it will be a while before I am completely calm again.

I'm sorry to hear that you still aren't well. You'll have to find something less potent to clean your toilet.

@sprite1950 I will still use it, but simply because I know how to clean with it! lol I won't let my mother use it ever again.

Haha, I was using something less potent. That bleach cleaner was for hard stains, not toilets. :P

Bleach, hot water and a squirt of dish soap can get mighty frothy... But I doubt you (a) heat your toilet bowl, or (b) pee Fairy Liquid.

It depends out much fairy dust I eat when I sleep. That stuff goes straight to the badder!

@pgntwo It just isn't helpful. I can think of something worse though: an over-full bladder when sleeping, and you happen to have one of those "I'll just pee over here" type dreams. :P Anytime that I have to pee in a dream, I force myself awake very quickly!

@OneOfMany Nothing badder than an over-full bladder

The best thing is to flush the bleach down the toilet before you use it. Then it won't be a problem.

@akalinus I smelled what I assumed to be bleach, but I thought it was in the sink. I never thought anyone would leave bleach in a toilet! By the time I came in, it was hours later. Most of the fumes had spread through the house, so the source was difficult to trace.

@OneOfMany I thought the fumes irritated you. Wouldn't that be a big clue?

The mind can play horrible tricks on us. Believe me I know. I went into the emergency room three times swearing I was having either a heart attack or a stroke only to find out I have arthritis and cervical radiculopathy of the spine. But I experienced all of the systems as my mind told me the pain was the end of my days on this earth and of course it caused my heart to speed up greatly as well. It's hard to get your mind off it. But now that you know the real cause, it should wane.

I was at my local health center today to set up an appointment to get tested for allergies, and the PA told me that bleach fumes will cause lung irritation pretty quickly, so my prolonged exposure certainly didn't help. I have been breathing much better lately because of an allergy medicine that I started taking, which allows me to take some deep breaths, and it has cut into my anxiety levels. Since anxiety can make allergic reactions worse, that certainly wasn't helping things. They said I should just keep taking the medicine I am, and I should be fine. Yesterday I found another cause of my allergies, and it turns out to be the Asian Ladybug. I got out of bed early, and was breathing fine, but when I went back to bed, I got super congested and short of breath. When I gave up trying to sleep, I found one of the ladybugs beneath me, so I looked up whether they cause allergies, and they certainly do. So there's been an ongoing effort to eradicate the ladybugs from my home, so that that is one less source of irritation. I think in the end, it was a giant occurrence of many different things that just overwhelmed me. To date my various causes are: Seafood Sunflower Seeds Bleach Fumes Anxiety Acid Reflux Pet Dander Dust Walnuts (possibly) Snacks made near nuts Asian Ladybugs Even low Oxygen levels can fit some of my symptoms... One or two causes I was fine with, but with all of the factors together over a short time period, it got really hard to handle.

@porwest The first three on the list contributed them most, but I didn't have the Anxiety until I ran into them. I like being able to be calm during the day. Before I had a handle on things, breathing was the only thing I was focused on.

I am really surprised to know that you still use bleaching powder to clean toilets? This practice has been discontinued in India few decades back! Please take care chlorine can be big irritant if you are already a patient with lung problems! Thanks!

@OneOfMany , oh sorry I never had the idea what exactly happened! Now please take care and get your self exposed to fresh air so that you will feel better and try to get rid of that air present in your bed room! Thanks! God bless!

I never use bleach to clean toilets! My mother had to use the bathroom while I was outside working, she found a bleach spray for surfaces and used it on the toilet bowl (it's not meant to be used like that!). Then she left it there, despite the warning label saying only use in an open space. My bathroom is very small, and the bedroom is right beside it. And she wonders why I'm always telling her not to clean. XD

What really helped me with my anxiety attacks is to sit up when I start hyperventilating and breath in and out and stay calm... I was told that it's not good to lie down when you can't breath ... So make sure you sit up when you feel the anxiety coming ..

The problems for me is to breathe when I have them. That's part of what makes them worse. Anxiety doesn't get me much when my airways are unobstructed.

precisely, urine has some ammonia, and so is the bleach.

Yes, but very little. Also, from what I learned, water absorbed chlorine gas, so if the mixture is happening below the surface of the toilet water, most is being absorbed. Unfortunately, it's making hydrochloric acid in that case. :P

I know what bleach fumes to the lungs feels like. Someone offered to pay me for cleaning their deep freezer. They had dumped an entire jug of javex into it and very little if any water. Stupid me gets right down into it head first to clean and a few minutes later my lungs were on fire! I couldnt breathe at all and an ambulance was called. There is no sense in using bleach to clean what a little pinesol or mr clean can do. I'm surprised your mother hasn't killed herself after all those years of using bleach in the toilet. (I'm assuming she does this at her house)

She uses other cleaners. And she said: "That's all I could find!" when there was two cans of bubble scrub (meant for toilets) right beside it. Her house is large, so fumes would be reduced from that alone. Basically, she was being lazy. I seem to be breathing easier now, but it's still not the best. Anxiety stays with me for a while. I'm surprised you were able to keep your head in there for so long. I only could smell it just enough with my fumes, but they weren't overwhelming next to me.
