John Candy was an actor known largely for his roles in comedy movies in the 1980s and 1990s.
He has come to mind again recently for me. As things have been a bit difficult or intense lately I have been trying to encourage the watching of comedy movies to lighten the mood around home.
Enter 80s and 90s comedies. Back when comedy movies were still funny. I don't know, but it seems like a lot of today's "comedy" films either aren't funny to me, or the jokes don't make sense.
As we've re-watched those great comedy hits like "National Lampoon's Vacation", and "The Great Outdoors" - and a few days ago, for the first time I watched "Little Shop of Horrors" and was surprised to see John Candy in a bit part as a radio DJ. When I was a kid I just knew that I enjoyed John Candy's movies. That he was funny. Now I realize the true genius of the man John Candy was. His roles were usually that of the humble every-man, hard working, honest, loyal with a great sense of comedic timing.
Apparently he was genuinely similar to the roles he chose. According to the article I've linked below - his friends saw that he liked to entertain and had a gift for making people feel comfortable along with being generous with his fans.
In addition to "National Lampoon's Vacation", and "Great Outdoors", and "Little Shop of Horrors" he was also in blockbuster movies such as "Blues Brothers", "Planes, Trains and Automobiles", "Home Alone", "Nothing but Trouble" and "Only the Lonely".
John Candy was the first celebrity death that really effected me. I was 12 when he passed and it was quite shocking for me.
So, thanks for the laughs John Candy. Even though he's been gone for over 20 years he's still missed.
RARELY BEFORE HAD HE CALLED his costars after hours—not because he was unfriendly, but because John Candy, who seemed to…

Hm, possibly not. The article I linked to seemed to suggest that heart disease ran in his family.
