Do you have a favorite musician that most people haven't even heard of?

Of course, there's the "popular" music that reminds us of a particular time and place. I remember the Beatles from my early childhood, the Allman Brothers from my teenage years, and bands like REM from my early adulthood.
But do you have favorite musicians that you've encountered over the years, often by chance, that have stuck with you? Sometimes, many of your friends won't even have heard of them.
One of mine is Jesse Winchester, a folkie that my older brothers turned me onto in my formative years. His early songs were simple and beautiful, and his voice was to die for. I'll try to find a link to one of my favorites.
Who were musicians that you loved along the way? Can you find a link on YouTube?

When i was a child I loved the Jackson 5 and The Carpenters. As a teen I was a big fan of the Eagles, Hall and Oates, Linda Ronstadt and Earth, Wind and Fire to name a few. I guess I mostly liked mainstream music.

Oh, you know me, I’ll listen to everything from ABBA to Zevon (technically I think the list goes to ZZ Top). And you know I enjoyed Jesse Winchester!

@TheHorse -- not until Rodney Crowell covered it. I don't think I got into him until Nothing But a Breeze, about the time Buffett and Emmylou started covering him. That was about the time he appeared on the Midnight Special, too.

A lot of my secret, favorite musicians are not very well known. One who comes to mind is David Lindley. An accomplished session musician, his name doesn't usually pop out at anyone. Some might recognize his falsetto from "The Load-out/ Stay" on Jackson Brown's "Running on Empty". He's also playing the slide/steel guitar. Lindley played with Brown for a lot of years on many tours and albums. He's played with a lot of artists in a lot of genres. But he's also got his own band. He plays a variety of stringed instruments, some of which are really obscure or obsolete. He's just weird when it comes to his own music style, but he's brilliant nonetheless. Lots of Youtube videos if you want to have a look or listen.

@Rollo1 -- I got to meet David Lindley a couple of years ago when he did a concert near Cincinnati. You're right about people not knowing him: I thought the place would be packed, and instead there were maybe 30 people there. He only played about 15 songs, but oh, did he tell stories...and that was as good as the music!!! I also saw him open for Joe Walsh in 1981. So yes, he's been around for awhile!
@TheHorse is also correct that old farts like us know his music quite well, thanks to all his work with Jackson and his solo material (two words: "Rag Bag").

Jack Johnson. I have found that not many know who he is.

For me it would be from my late teens to early twenties, a local band from Philly who for a fraction of a second was played on mainstream radio then they went back to being a hometown rock group. BTW the Exton drive in in the video was right around the corner from where I grew up. The group were The Hooters and this was the biggest and only mainstream hit.

I had an album of his at one point. I recall a singer named Michael Dinner whose recording career was short, but he became a writer/director for TV (Wonder Years, Justified, Sneaky Pete and more). He sang well too.

I can't help but favor my brother's band "Eddy's Basement. My brother Eddy is the founder and the drummer for the band. Here they are doing a cover of ZZ top "I Need You Tonight"

That was a nice song. I like listening to all kinds of music and I like to search YouTube to find new music by bands that I haven't heard of before. I don't really like Pop music per se although some of it is catchy.

@morgoodie Oh, I totally agree. Really good contemporary music can be hard to find, since a lot of small venues are shutting down. We live in a corporate world. Something funny happened the other night. I was watching a recent Austin City Limits with a friend (also a veteran "local musician"), and we realized as we were watching that we both were better than the musicians in the young band they were featuring (I can't remember what they were called). The lead singer had charisma, but was only good, and the lead guitarist and bass player were OK, but could be taking lessons from either of us. It was an eye-opening experience.

@TheHorse I think sometimes the lesser known ones are the better ones. They are more true to the music and art of it than those that become popular with the masses.

I've always like the sound of Brian McFadden. There is something in his voice.
