do atms in your country have cash limits?

when you get a new atm card, the bank gives it to you in an envelope with a letter. it details how much you can withdraw daily and the fees. here's an example from bdo (banco de oro): atm withdrawal maximum amount per day: 50,000 philippine pesos (about US$ 963.50) maximum amount per single transaction: 10,000 pesos (about US$ 192.70) minimum amount per single transaction: 200 pesos (about US$ 3.85) that's why sometimes the person ahead of you seems to take forever to finish. if they're withdrawing 30,000 pesos, they would have to insert their atm card and repeat the withdrawal process three times.

That is what's frustrating with BPI. That is why, if you will need a big money all at one time when in Manila , you cannot do it. You have to withdraw from your other ATM to fill the needed big cash at once.

I almost never use a ATM machine, but I think to remember that the minimum is 20 Swiss Francs (21 $) and the maximum is 1,000 Swiss Francs (1040$).

20 swiss francs would be 1,081.36 philippine pesos, while 1,000 would be 54,067.83. so you only withdraw over the counter, issue checks or do online banking, instead of using an atm?

@hereandthere Checks are no more used here in Switzerland. We do almost everything online, I pay almost everything using my credit card. I withdraw time by time over the counter at my local bank.

Here it seems you can withdraw maximum 5000 yuan, which is about USD796 from ATM each time. And you can't withdraw over 20000 yuan which is about USD3184 everyday.

@hereandthere You can withdraw this amount from ATM. If you need withdraw within 50000 yuan, you can go to the bank counter. If you need to withdraw more than 50000 yuan, usually you have to reserve or tell the bank earlier.

5000 yuan would be about 41,402 philippine pesos while 20000 would be 165,610. do you still withdraw over the counter at the bank?

Actually, having a maximum limit for the withdrawable amount from the ATM has one advantage - in case you are held up and forced to withdraw from the ATM under duress, your loss exposure is only limited up to the maximum withdrawable limit.

great point! the times i was tasked to withdraw big amounts i did over the counter, so i can also sit a while and "hide" them. hehe.

@sunrisefan i think most banks do now because they prefer people to use the atm for withdrawals and not add to the crowd inside the bank. hehe.

@hereandthere I think BPI charges a certain fee if you withdraw over the counter when you have not yet exceeded the withdrawal limit (as in, for example, your withdrawal limit is 20K and you intend to withdraw only 10K but you don't want to go to the machine).

I don't use ATM ..But I know that if I lose my credit card and whoever gets hold of it and know my pin, they can withdraw more than $20,000 on one transaction .. Just thinking about it, makes me feel like going to the bank and change that to the minimum..

Yes, here in India SBI is the largest banking sector. One can withdraw from any SBI atm for maximum 4 transactions in a month. A person can withdraw maximum Rs.10000(Around 183 us dollar) per transaction. If one does more than four times then extra charges will be deducted from account. I don't know the amount of extra charge as I haven't tried extra withdrawal.

so SBI allows 4 free atm withdrawals in a month, max of 10K each, so 40K a month. here, if i withdraw from another bank's atm, there is a small withdraw fee, ex. 12 pesos or 66 us cents

@hereandthere every bank wants their customer to use respective ATM of banks. I think we have some relief here, as in some of the other banks where 2 transactions per month are allowed for free. Every bank has their specific rule regarding it.
