Another Plane Down leaving New York, brought back scarey memories

I am watching the news about the plane that went down leaving New York today. It brought back so many memories as my husband and I were on a plane going to the Bahama Islands years ago. We also had my in-laws with us.
We had to go from Newark, New Jersey to an island and then get on a smaller plane to continue our trip. No larger planes could reach the islands.
After a short while, we were told there were engine problems and we had to land on a different small island. Needless to say we were all scared, especially my in-laws.
We got off the plane and sat in the terminal for hours. After awhile we were told to get back on the same plane to our final destination. We were so scared but were told there were no other planes going where we were going. We got on the plane and no one said a word. I think we had less than 12 people on that plane including the pilot.
We made it fine and wondered about our trip back after the week.

I couldn't understand when you said that the plane went down! You meant to say that it has taken an emergency landing?
After learning the experience you had while flying to the island you mentioned! I can imagine your feelings and fear at that time when you have re-boarded the same plane which safely made you to reach the destination!
I too flew in a 12 seater plane as there were no flights operating at that time on the route which I wanted but everything went on well without any problem! Thanks a lot for sharing your dreadful experience here @ramapo17! Stay blessed!

I read about the plane having engine trouble and it also brings memories back of a very rocky journey from Birmingham to Spain.
I was wondering if we would ever get there too.
Glad you made it back though and you must have been scared to get back on that same plane.

Thanks @amadeo, I am glad things turned out ok to and we didn't think about it the time we were on the vacation until we had to get back on the small plane. My husband was looking for a beverage cart but the plane was to small for that.

How terrifying! I have never travelled on a small plane before but I can imagine all sorts were going through your mind at this time wondering whether you would make it.

@sprite1950 I didn't think so either but it was really interesting and we could see all the different colors of the water. That was bueatiful.

I figured I had to go some time and if that was when my time was up, so be it. I am certainly glad that was not my time.

I hadn't heard about the plane in New York. What happened? Was it a small plane or a big plane?
For some reason, I always seem to feel safer in a small plane than in a large commercial airliner. My reasoning (whether right or wrong) is that a small plane has somewhat of a chance to glide to an emergency landing if something goes wrong, but a big commercial airliner will drop out of the sky like a lead weight if something goes wrong. I don't know if little planes are any safer than big planes, but that is my rationale. lol

@ramapo17 I don't really ever watch the news, so I haven't seen the story on this. I did hear from a few people talking that an engine exploded on a Southwest flight and killed one of the passengers.
I was on a flight many years ago where one of our engines caught on fire, but the pilot shut the engine down and we continue flying on just the other engine.
I also remember hearing several years ago that a plane was taking off from an airport and one of its engines fell off.
It's a miracle that we don't have more plane crashes considering how poorly maintained many of these planes are.

@ramapo17 I was driving by Palm Beach International Airport one evening on I-95, and a jet was taking off, and as it rose into the sky one of its engines caught on fire. It lit up the night sky like you wouldn't believe! The jet immediately circled back and landed safely. I'm sure it was a very scary moment for those passengers.

@moffittjc You are right. I remember the one about the engine falling off. We watch a tv show about air accidents. They are really scary and supposed to be true stories.

I hate airplanes to start with @ramapo17 but a small one? Oh heck no.

@nanette64 That is to bad. I have found that even if I am afraid, sometimes I will give in for fear of something like that happening to me.

We had to fly about ten years ago when we were researching whether to move from Alabama to New York to be church planters. I hated the experience. The plane was cramped. I was nauseated the whole time. The airports are just scary. The security is so invasive and the layovers were nightmares. One of our layovers was in Newark, NJ. That place is straight up nasty and scary. My husband, on the other hand, is ok with flying. Not me, though!

I never had any problems with Newark airport. To me Atlanta was so over crowded and scary and big. did you ever move to NYC?

I have never flown at all and have no ambitions to do so! It must have been awful having that return journey at the back of your mind for the whole vacation.

Small planes and helicopters are not for the faint-hearted.
Once I was returning to Singapore from India and we were asked to disembark due to engine trouble.
We boarded the same plane the next day but it flew over land and took 50% extra time.
Though they did not tell us, the pilot wanted not to take any risk! siva
