Does that sound rude?

Do you ever write something quite innocently, read it back and then wonder if it sounds a bit rude? Text is very open to misinterpretation because we cannot see facial expressions or body language so any humour can get lost which is why I rely on the use of emoticons. I would never intentionally offend someone (unless they were rude to me in the first place) but I sometimes wonder if my words can be misinterpreted. Have you ever offended anyone without meaning to?

When in doubt leave it out is how I go about here. There can be situations when a response could beto get back at someone who has been rude.

@allknowing I can only think of one person who has been really rude to me on another site. You would know who it was .. the admin of a forum but not FC. I think you had trouble with him too.

I worked with a cashier before. The cashier is a married lady. She is jealous of my salary, so she cheated and had done a lot of things to ruin a relationship between my boy friend and me. After doing a lot of thing to sow discord among us. After she done the things, she is proud of smile and says that, I am married, who will trust you. That's the worst woman I met before. She is jealous of my salary is higher than hers and my boy friend's salary is higher than her husband as well as higher post. And she said why my salary is higher than hers, why I and my boy friend can buy an apartment with full payment, and her husband and she only can buy a house with a bank loan, so she doesn't want us to be together. So, with meet such a woman, do you trust the world has such a limmer?

Yes there are mean people everywhere. Jealousy can make people do bad things. You just have to move on and try to ignore them.

@fei1125 Don't worry about her. Some people are jealous of everyone they meet. Just be happy with you boyfriend and don't let her get you down.

I hope I did not, but you are right saying that "without seeing the facial expressions", sometimes the words might be misinterpreted. English is not even my mother language, it's easy to write something wrong.

I'm sure we've all been miss-interpreted before. I just hope that people will ask if they think that. With our phones changing our words it's a wonder we can communicate at all.

How I hate predictive text. It's changed some of the words I've written so that my texts make no sense at all

@sprite1950 recently, after I texted a message to my husband, he did the very thing I asked him not to do and when I looked my text over later i realized that one of my words that allowed the txt to make more sense was changed.

I have. Even though being a writer (outside of here) does allow you to arrange your words in a particular manner that helps to convey intent, inflection, connotation, and context...sometimes you don't always get it right, and even still some people will misinterpret any of the above. Emoticons are helpful and I use them often on sites like this and in social media for that very reason.

I think it's often down to people misinterpreting humour perhaps due to language barriers,

@sprite1950 I am sure that is very likely. Sometimes I read things and have to go back and try and figure out what someone meant.

How very rude to suggest that some people may not be able to write well enough to convey their exact feelings (he says having to rely on the use of an emoticon to indicate he is joking!!!!)

I think we all cause offence from time to time because our words are twisted or misconstrued. Even submitting a discussion seems to offend some people. Unless you are named, the discussion probably is not aimed at you.

What you say is very true. I rely on the emoticons to try to show I'm joking or having a slight dig at someone. It is easy to come across as rude if you are not careful.

some are sensitive therefore they do fire back when they read comments that sound or look like rudeness. i think i can sense a rude person with the way he or she comments in a discussion, that is why i make my move and stop her/his attitude and comment, with a period.

Some people could react violently instead of asking you what you mean. They can really be out of context too accusing you of something without meaning to. I do not remember having offended someone here or I sensed that we are not on the same train of thought, I would apologize I might have offended or something.

It happens at times but i think if one is open minded and has a sense of humor it gets better. at times one can text something innocent to someone sensitive and they find that it was rude towards them but if someone else reads it they see nothing wrong with it. being open minded helps at times though..
