I never thought I would like being an Online English Teacher.

I never thought I would become an Online English Teacher. Growing up, I swore to myself that I would never become a teacher. I thought that being a teacher, or a tutor, is hard. I just don't think that I am patient enough for the job. My career as an online teacher happened by accident. My only experience as a tutor or a teacher is when I teach my kids their homework. I am more into writing. I was repotting my cacti and succulents one day when I got a call from a friend. She is resigning from her job as an Online English as a Second Language(ESL) Teacher, and she needed someone to replace her and handle her students. I tried it for 10 days, and surprisingly, I am enjoying it. I learn so much from my students, and at the same time, they are learning from me.

@rheicel Sadly, I am not. I am thinking about it, though. Maybe I can go back to school and take some units. Do they still accept those in their late 30's?

There are certain companies that pay well. There are some teachers who do not get paid that much but they choose to stay because they love what they are doing, or they would like to continue helping their students do better.

Hi @chavezrmc! I guess it also depends on the company. Sometimes I just use wifi and somehow the Skype call gets through. There will also be times when I am already on wired internet but the connection will still be bad.

When I came back to our motherland from China, I was looking for a job. One day, a good friend referred to work in a Korean Academy. Then, I moved to an online teaching company as an office-based teacher. I am one of the pioneers. However, I decided to work at home with the same company. For the reason that I cannot deal with the admin.

There was no formal training because I am not working for a company. I am an independent contractor. I learned by observing fellow teachers from my team, and through coaching.

What I have often wondered about online English teaching is: Do you teach only by e-mail or Do you work by skyping or something similar?

Hi! It works through video call. Sometimes the students have their own textbooks. There will be times when I would prepare the material depending on their level. The objective is to let them talk so they will be comfortable in using English as their second language.

I have never wanted to be a teacher. I don't have any patience. How can you be patient with students? And what are the benefits of working with them? I may become a teacher some day.

@Anne88 Yes, I am honored. I tutor all major subjects for grade school students. Yes, for me it is. I think it also depends upon the paying capability of the parents. There are those parents who are too frugal and demand more. There are who do not pay big but compensates for the delicious foods. There are also the kind ones and will pay you really good. hehhe

It is nice to meet fellow tutors from time to time. Being an online teacher has its pros and cons, but I am loving it so far! What subject do you tutor? I heard one on one/ man to man tutors earn more than those who do online teaching.
