I Remember You

Do you like to be remembered by others?
My little niece is 10 years old now, yet she always remembers one of the older kids (about 12 YO back then) who had helped her when she was a little 4-5 YO preppie at that elementary school
Alas, this older girl was remembered for a wrong reason: She used to steal snacks from my niece's lunch box until the little kid's mother wrote a note, asking the older one to stop it.
Unfortunately these kids have often bumped into each other, and my niece always whispered to me if I was around, 'Remember that girl? She stole my snacks that year!'
I do feel sorry for that teenager, being remembered for a wrong reason. Have you ever remembered someone only because they did something bad to you or your loved ones?
(That teenager seems to be a decent person these days.)

(Oh dear, I suddenly remembered being labeled as a 'ruthless captain' by many of my classmates for years... )

A classmate whom I haven't seen for about 20 years remembered when during exams, he said he was trying to copy from my paper and when I noticed it I covered it so he couldn't cheat. That's how he remembered me after 20 years, lol.

@LadyDuck Uh oh, one of my young relatives is a Pisces. He wanted me to do something a bit unethical for him and I refused. I was hoping that with time, he would understand why I had refused to do so. (It was almost like refusing to give a young child a knife, and the child now grows into an adult.)

It is most unfortunate to remember people because of the wrongs they have done to you! These bad experiences stick in the mind. I am sure the little girl has changed as she has grown up a bit.

I have tried very hard to convince my niece so, but she kept glaring at that teenager whenever she met the girl . When she first did that at the age of 5, I often giggled and tried my best to cover THAT attitude of my young relative. With time, that teenager knows me more than my niece (since I always grinned and said hello to her - to distract her from my niece's hostile look ).

You always remember things that hurt you or made an impression on you. I remember many such incidents from when I was a young child, bullying for one, to this day and even though I have not see them in ages I still remember them today and the incidents are clear in my mind.

A kid in our old neighborhood used to bully me badly only because my mother was better than her mother (in career and wealth ). I tried to avoid her for a long long time, until one day she did go a bit too far, so I got mad. I asked her if she wanted a real session of wrestling with me right in front of the horrified looks of about a hundred kids. (Both that kid and I were two skinny petite little girls.) Since she was always considered herself as THE PRINCESS of the neighborhood, she backed off right at once. That round, I won victoriously!

It's nice to be remembered. You'd think the older girl would have an inkling as to why your niece remembers her and apologize for all those times. But, maybe she has to learn that it's okay to still apologize at this late date.
You may be able to teach your niece how to or about forgiving the girl even without an apology.
That way if they are ever together again they can start fresh.
Maybe the girl was hungry and not just mean?

I heard from my niece that such activity going on every day for about a few weeks until her mom found out. It went on even on the day the kid's older sister (an ex-student there) wrote a note, 'Pls don't eat other people's snack, if you are hungry, do go to the main office and ask for a sandwich.'
I guess that teen knows very well what she did was wrong, but I had met her mom, a very young and career orientated mother who didn't seem to be too good at taking care of her kids.

I try to imagine you with a long memory in that regards. I tried very hard too to not forgetting those who were mean to me, but I often forgot at the critical moment. Once or twice, I saw a face whom I recognized and grinned at them, saying 'hello, how have you been!' etc, only after walking away that I remembered that THAT PERSON was my #1 enemy! I so wanted to kick myself. No wonder that person looked at me with a horrified look (since the last time we had had words, I told her where to jump! )
