Tips for a Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day all! I could have gone on a garbage clean up today, which I wouldn't have been opposed to, actually, other than the fact that this would have been very tough on my germ fears.
So, instead, I thought I would share some of my favorite "green" tips. They may not be anything stellar but they are fairly easy to do and can save a little money in addition to being better for this marvelous planet we call home.
1) Scratch pads
Search for any old computer printouts, advertising or letters printed only on one side - on plain paper. Make sure it isn't anything you wish to save - and cut the paper in halves or quarters. Run a staple through one edge. You now have scratch paper. Be mindful though if there is any personal information on said paper. You wouldn't want someone say.... reading your bank account number, on the back of your grocery list.
2) Appliances and power strips
Take any appliance that doesn't need to always be on - and plug it in to a power strip. When not in use, simply turn the whole power strip off. Good examples of these type appliances are TVs, computer printers, Dvd players - as these still draw small amounts of power even when they are off. If I'm going for an extended period of time, I will turn also unplug my modem and microwave.
3) Re-use plastic bags
Those plastic shopping bags are subject to a lot of controversy -- when I get them I re-use them to line my trash cans. This may not seem like a big thing, however it means that I'm not buying plastic bags to put my trash in - and therefor saving money, and the environmental impact by not throwing away the plastic shopping bag AND the trash bag.
There are probably many other steps one could take but these are ones I have found useful.
Happy Earth day!

@dgobucks226 Ah that is a nice option too, those recycle bins for the bags. However I usually need bags/run out of them :-)

Oh interesting - here - bags are still (mostly) free. There's two stores I can think of - Aldi and Sam's Club- that charge for the bags. You are welcome at both of those places to use an empty cardboard box for free though

Happy Earth Day to you too! Yes, it is important for each of us to do our part so that the earth does not get even more polluted. There was a habit here in the suburbs of Riga, Latvia to place non-burnable garbage like old electronics, jars and other such things along the side of deserted roads. Usually, the mess would get big and then some of the trash would so to say wanter into the woods. Luckily it got cleaned up and now this is no longer a problem and everyone disposes of garbage the right way.

Thanks! Ah yes, I hate buying trash bags. It's (literally) like throwing away money. lol. I know when I did the power strip thing it took a bit of figuring which ones could go on the strip and which ones shouldn't.... and it does mess with the little digital clock on my dvd player.... but that's ok with me :-)
