He writes me love letters every day

I love you, he writes. You’re pretty. You’re the best! My four year old son writes me the sweetest love letters everyday. Sometimes he draws me- tall with a big head, a ponytail, a wide smile, a narrow waist to die for, triangular skirt, and big hands and feet. I’m usually holding his hands in those drawings. And he is always as pleased as punch. My son writes me love letters everyday. On the wall. I’ve tried to dissuade him. I don’t punish him because I don’t want to smother his creativity, but I’ve bought copybooks, art materials, given him drawing books… I even set up a little easel for him to draw and paint. He used the copybooks to make paper planes and stick men, which he then put up on the wall. The drawing books and easel? They’re all blank. I think my son is headed for an illustrious career as an artist. I fear that his art may be graffiti only. I love his art, but I can see that it could be a bit messy to the objective eye. And I hate the fact that my elder sister keeps sniffing about my home and lecturing me about how she kept her children in line when they were his age. My sister’s coming by today, and I am dreading the visit. See, my son has been pretty busy of late, and I have been too- on myLot. I don’t feel like cleaning the walls today. Do you think I should just tell my sister to shut it? I just can’t think of punishing my son for writing on walls.

You may explain to her the reason why you dont want to clean the walls. I would definitely want to see those drawings. My parents did not remove our drawings in the house.

I'll add some in a future post then. He's quite good actually! With his letters and the art. Though I may be biased.

Dont punish him. At his age, it is normal for him to scribble on the walls. Let him be, it's his process of learning. If you'll stop him, there is a possiblity that you will interrupt his interest.

Yep, that's what I think. If only my big sis could see it like that.

He is more imaginative and artistic than what you are thinking ! At the age of 4 he is having so much to express and draw! Yes I can foresee an hidden artist within him1 You are lucky to blessed with such a.lovely son! I wouldn't have mind about my wall with his creations had I been in your place! On the contrary, i would have preserved every creations by him by taking snap with the help of the smart phone what we have with us! God bless you and your son @AlisaTR !

I know many kids draw pictures or write on the wall. My daughter drew pictures on the wall when she was a kid. I fell proud of it. lol. She won't do it when she grows up. So now I paint the room again. It's as white as before. So don't worry.

@AlisaTR When he is all grown up, you will surely miss the little child but he will still offer you the affection

It is, isn't it? And I know the time may come when I might be craving these expressions of affection when he is all grown up. So I am taking every hug, every kiss, every whisper of affection... and yes, every drawing or painting that i can get.

I personally think that it is fine, my friend. It should be explained that things are done at his age.

@AlisaTR I do agree with her advice. Once the child knows what's wrong with his or her actions, it will be corrected.

@Shavkat That's my view. And I think it's fine if my sister's kids didn't draw on her walls, Probably they didn't want to. Probably they had different ways of expressing themselves. Everyone is unique and I think everyone should be allowed to be unique. The time will come, very soon when, as @LoriAMoore correctly states, I will have to enforce rules and be strict about them... but I just want him to be my baby a little bit longer...
