Do I Look Fat?

When my girlfriend texted me a photo of herself from the gym the other day, I immediately thought she was going to ask the question millions of girlfriends and wives across the world ask their boyfriends/husbands: "Do I look fat?" It's such a trap question, because it's one of those questions where us men lose no matter how we answer. If we answer no, we get accused of lying. If we answer yes, well...we'll be sleeping on the couch for the next month, if they don't break up with us or divorce us. But thankfully, she didn't ask that dreaded question at all. She simply said to me, "Look, I almost have my summer beach body back!" Which is funny, because she never lost her summer beach body from last summer...or the summer before that...or the summer before that. She always looks good! Ladies of myLot, do you ever ask your significant other if you look fat?

Although I sometimes give him a hard time in other ways, I never ask this question. But you're right. It is a trap question.

There was a comedian--I can't remember which-- who talked about this very subject: Her: "Honey, do these jeans make me look fat?" Him: "Darling, it's not the jeans that make you look fat!"

I know I am fat so i dont even ask. I wouldn't expect him to lie to me to make me feel good. If people don't like my summer body they don't have to look.

I don't think it should matter if someone is fat or thin, chunky, bean pole, big-boned or whatever. If they are comfortable in their own body, then that should be all that matters. Or, if there significant other loves them just the way they are, then that is the most important thing. As you can see from the photo of my gf, she is in great shape. But she could gain 20 pounds and I would still love her just the same.

Thank you! A woman who gets it! It's not fair at all to put us men in such an uncomfortable position with a trap question!

Not at all. I have never asked anybody if I were fat and if they tell me I am, I would be the happiest. I have never ever been fat my entire life, not even when I was pregnant. It's my obsession, to become fat.

@moffittjc Seafood doesn't help much. I do eat a lot of them mind you lol! And I can really eat a lot. But still not gaining that much weight. I was 55kg in December until March, but now I'm just 53kg again.. And that's without exercise at all. I need to eat morel.

Good point, the mirrors never lie and it saves the husband/partner trying to think of the 'right' thing to say.

I know I'm fat, so I don't have to ask. Besides, I'm single. Actually I'm not fat just full figured, which looks fat in the mirror.

@Starmaiden I think too many women get brainwashed by the media into thinking that if they are not slim and petite, that they're fat. Let's not kid ourselves. Not everyone can be as slim as those fashion models we see on magazine covers. I think women need to learn to be satisfied with their body type and embrace it; besides, there are men out there who love women in all shapes and sizes. And us men are no different...we come in all shapes and sizes as well.

@moffittjc That is so considerate of you. I don't mind if someone will tell me i'm fat. I will take it positively and try to lessen my weight. But not all has a positive attitude towards it though.

@chavezrmc For some people, it is very emotional dealing with their weight. I understand the sensitivity to the whole situation. Luckily, my girlfriend doesn't get upset or offended easily. But honestly, she has nothing to worry about, as she does a good job maintaining a healthy weight.

That is true. But I wouldn't say "You're fat, you need to lose some weight." Instead, I would be graceful about it, and say something like, "We should join a gym, working out is so healthy for us and we'll look and feel so much better!"

@Shellyann36 I think women should realize more that men don't all like one particular body style on a woman. Just because the media portrays ever woman as super-model skinny doesn't mean that's what every man wants. Some men like skinny women; some like full-figured women; some like T&A; some like legs. Every man's preference is different.

@infatuatedbby Well, there's other ways to get fit besides swimming! Jogging is another good way, except that you get really sweaty (at least here in Florida). Crossfit training is also a great way to get in shape, but it usually kicks people's butts who do it! lol

I'd like to think that it is our nighttime bedroom moves that keeps her in such good shape! haha But truth be told, she swims a lot, and that could very well be what keeps her in great shape.

@moffittjc Well I fed my children so they were huge and I loved it because it was the only time that men ever shouted out of car windows "nice pair love" . When they went down they were still bigger than they had been before.

@sprite1950 So they stayed big long after you had children? I know they get bigger when a woman is pregnant and/or nursing, but don't they normally go back down to their pre-pregnancy size afterward?

@RubyHawk I'm doing well Ruby! Just enjoying life and living the dream! And also trying to stay dry here in what is supposed to be sunny Florida! Sadly, it's been raining solid for two weeks straight, and now we have this tropical storm to contend with. But I don't let that get my spirits down! It's still a beautiful day to be alive!

No. Never. It's a bad thing to ask. Though once I asked if a pair of pants made my butt look big. He looked paniced... so I quickly added "I sure hope so." Personally though - I've been doing a lot of reading about body positivity and anti-diet culture ... (which no, isn't promoting people to gain weight- instead just promoting people to stop hating their bodies) -- and I have decided that I will from now on take "fat" like a compliment. :-) Random person: You're fat. Me: Yes. Isn't it lovely? Thank you.

No, one has learned over the years not to ask your husband about anything that has to do with oneself because your answer is usually another question. EX: Do I look fat?? Answer: Do you think you look fat or What do you think??
