Can this be explained in physics?

I have to marvel at the way waiters, waitresses and bar servers can carry a tray of food/drinks in one hand, holding the tray up to shoulder length and walking across a crowded restaurant/bar without spilling it on someone or all over the floor. Most times their eyes are focused straight ahead of them and not on the tray. I can't carry a cup of coffee from my kitchen to my living room (about 20 paces in all) without it dripping all over the floor. If I watch the cup as I carry it, only some of it will spill, but if I take my eyes off of it, by the time it reaches the coffee table half of it is on the floor! Is there a physical explanation for this phenomenon?

I do not think so. When I a waitress at Shoneys I could tote the ray up and on my finger tips, we were trained to do it. O made good tips worki ng there.

1. They are trained for that I guess. 2. I think because when we pay attention to that thing, we'll worry a little bit, so our body shakes & the coffee spills. It's all about the motion of the body parts maybe. :D

My balance is usually pretty good, but having cat doesn't help the situation.

not sure but since i got to where i have to have a walker, i have to sit mine on a tray on the walker to make it my poor aunt worked all her life as a waitress. it takes lots of strength and steadiness. she ended up having a really bad back over it.

I can imagine getting a bad back from years of carrying heavy trays.

I think they are trained to do that.

I do not know, but I know that I can carry a big tray from the kitchen to the downstairs family room when I have guests and I spill nothing.

@Starmaiden To be honest I was not very good. It only happened once that I missed a step and I almost made a disaster, but I was able to keep my balance.

It amazes me at how those waiters and waitresses can balance those heavy trays. I can't walk and chew gum at the same time

@Starmaiden That is hilarious!!! Doodles occasionally drinks from my glass, but used to prefer the faucet in two bathrooms. We put a halt to that due to wet kitty feet.

@DianneN My cat drinks from a glass. She won't touch her water dish.

I always wonder that too. I always said I would be a good waitress because I'm very clumsy.
