Fake News. It's become a "buzz term" in the past year or so. The problem is, there's been "fake news" for eons.
The worst thing about a lot of the "fake news" is that it's coming from a most unlikely source: Christians.
You'd think that those Bible verses about "don't speak lies against your neighbor," "don't spread a false report," or "a false report will not go unpunished" (Exodus 20:16, Exodus 23:1, and Proverbs 19:5, respectively) would have "good Christian folk" thinking twice before spreading things that are half-truths or downright lies.
The most recent example of this is the thing that popped up in my Facebook feed, where it is being reported that a bill in California would "ban the sales of the Bible" in California.
No. Just plain no.
This isn't even close to the first time something like this has happened. To this day, there are stories circulating that Maralyn Murray O'Hair -- who died in 1995, mind you -- is trying to petition the FCC to shut down faith-based networks like CBN and EWTN. One I remember fondly (sarcasm there) while growing up was that the owners of Proctor & Gamble were satanists and their logo (a crescent moon looking at stars) was a satanic symbol. Oh, and the president of P&G appeared on the Phil Donohue Show and verified this. Of course, the president of Proctor & Gamble had never been a guest on the Donohue show (or Sally Jesse Raphael or Oprah or Dr. Phil or any of the modern equivalents), but this dang story just won't die.
Please, PLEASE stop it. I expect politicians to lie with every breath, but not preachers. You're not doing your faith any good. If anything, lying about one thing makes people wonder what else you could be lying about.
I've used the Ronstadt song before, so here's the Thompson Twins singing about fibs:

I wonder if all of this fake news serves a greater purpose. Like getting people to develop the ability to discern the truth from lies. Most people have believed everything They've heard and read up to this point, but now that fake news is the center of attention, people are beginning to question the validity of what they hear and read. This is a good thing. Just my thoughts.
